You are important, you matter, and you are allowed to take up space. So many of us struggle to believe this. Therapy offers a space for you to not face the challenges of life alone. The heart of my work lies in helping you harness your natural capacity for growth and healing, enabling you to establish a more meaningful and joyful connection with life.

Feeling disconnected from yourself, your culture, or your family? Worried about what your family thinks of your lifestyle? Tired of living life with a mask on? It's time to shed the weight of shame and start living guilt-free. I get it! You might feel like the sensitive one, the black sheep, or the scapegoat because you don't follow the same path as your family. Navigating boundaries within dysfunctional or collectivist culture families is tough. I am here for those ready to break free from cultural or familial expectations.

Disturbing symptoms such as anxiety, depression, disorientation, and explosive anger may be signs that important, but unseen, parts of ourselves need attention. I use a depth psychological approach to help clients develop greater awareness of who they are and what they need, so that they can use their symptoms as pathways to a more meaningful relationship with themselves and the world around them.

Your relationship with yourself and others cause you to suffer in ways that your friends can't fully comprehend. Feelings of failure, insecurity, anxiety and depression have left you feeling like a stranger in your own life. You question yourself, wondering if you've done something wrong... whether there's something you should be doing differently. Friends and family are trying to be helpful with their advice, but it often leaves you feeling worse. Some days you have hope and others you feel you are in true despair. You are desperate to make sense of it all, and you don't know where to turn.

Nice to meet you! I see clients who are new to therapy as well as clients who have experience with therapy. Many of my clients are young adults who are interested in long-term treatment as a way to help with day-to-day problems and to dig into any underlying issues that might impacting their moods and feelings. I’ve worked in many clinical settings that inform my approach. Before starting my private practice, I worked as a school-based therapist for students in middle and high school. I've also worked with a racially, socially, and economically diverse adult population while at a community outpatient clinic.

You deserve a counselor who makes you feel safe enough to be brave: to share openly, take risks, face fears, and rise to challenges. It takes motivation to look inward, honesty to build awareness, and courage to make change. Whether this is your first counseling experience or you’ve been in therapy before, you’re likely sensing that something’s not quite right, and you're seeking something bigger, bolder, or brighter than what you’re experiencing in your life now. I believe that longing is a sign of the inherent well-being available to you, and with a good therapist you can reconnect to your most authentic, radiant self.

I research and write about the psychological and spiritual development of aging women and work almost exclusively with older women (50+). I help women with anxiety, depression, empty nest, trauma, and mental illness, but I also have expertise in caretaking, chronic illness, and death and dying. Reviewing the free Kindle sample of my book, OMM 365, on Amazon can help you see if I am a good fit for you. I also have expertise/lower-fee option for women with current/past experiences working in the sex industry (any age; dancing, escort, trafficking). Please view my web site www.jenniferwestrom.com for more information.

The purpose of therapy is generally straight forward. Individuals seek professional help when conflict in their world causes pain. In the counseling session, clients share their concerns and therapists share their training and professional experience . I believe that it is my responsibility to provide a safe place where clients can talk about their thoughts, feelings and experiences in a non-judgmental atmosphere. My approach is interactive, validating, compassionate and collaborative. Depending on the client and/or the specific situation, I work from a variety of perspectives.

As a psychotherapist, my role is to help facilitate and support you, the client, in discovering, processing, and most importantly, deciding if changing some strategies you have needed to implement in negotiating your life is a next step in your treatment. It can take time to identify influencing factors in the problems experienced in life. Through the development of a safe and trusting therapeutic relationship, we will identify issues, if not already clear to you, and take action in the therapeutic relationship itself to develop the relational, emotional, and or behavioral skills you determine need to be the focus of your treatment.

As Dr. Irvin D. Yalom says, client and therapist are "fellow travelers" and I would love to travel with you on this journey. I believe you have the strength and power to change your life, but sometimes stuff gets in the way. I want to help you remove those blocks! I'm a relational therapist who uses attachment theory, some cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), a dash of dialectic behavior therapy (DBT), and quite a bit of humor in the therapy room. How do we get started on this journey together?

Realizing our own needs for acceptance and validation can be hard, especially when we have not been taught to ask for them ourselves. If you feel like you are bursting at the seams with new ideas but don't know where to start or are feeling pressured by new life transitions or impending crises, therapy may be a helpful place to lay your cards on the table and decide the next step.

Online Therapists

Is online therapy as effective as in-person?

Numerous studies suggest that online therapy can be as effective as in-person therapy. However, further research is needed to determine if online therapy provides the same benefits across all client populations. Individuals with severe mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, or those who may benefit from in-person check-ins, like those with eating disorders, may not experience the same level of benefit from online therapy. Nonetheless, the success of online therapy, much like in-person therapy, often hinges on the quality of the therapeutic relationship between the therapist and the client rather than the specific modality of therapy used.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of therapy conducted online?

One of the main advantages of online therapy is its convenience for both clients and therapists. It also allows clients who require specialized therapy to access a wider range of professionals than they could with only in-person sessions. Additionally, online therapy may be a more affordable option in some cases and often offers the same insurance benefits as in-person therapy. However, online therapy may not be suitable for everyone, especially those who value face-to-face interaction with a therapist. Therapists may find it more challenging to assess clients accurately in an online setting due to reduced nonverbal cues on camera. There is also the increased risk that disruptions caused by external factors, such as technology malfunctions, can hinder the therapy session. For these reasons, many therapists offer a "hybrid" therapeutic approach, alternating between seeing clients in-person and online.

Is online therapy suitable for children and adolescents?

Just like with adults, the accessibility and convenience of online therapy can greatly benefit children and adolescents. In fact, children and adolescents may be more accustomed to navigating online platforms than older adults, making online sessions feel more natural for them. Teens might also be interested in using additional online tools, such as therapist-recommended apps, as an adjunct to online therapy sessions. Apps for developing CBT skills, practicing mindfulness exercises, or tracking thoughts and moods can be helpful for teens receiving therapy. However, it's important to note that not all therapeutic modalities are well-suited to online therapy, especially those used with younger children. For example, play therapy, which helps younger children express their emotions, often requires in-person sessions to be fully effective.

Can I receive prescriptions and medication management with online therapy?

The ability for psychiatrists to prescribe medications through online therapy varies based on the medication and the states where the medical professional and client are located. While many prescribing regulations were relaxed during the COVID-19 pandemic, some states still enforce rules, especially concerning controlled substances, which may mandate an in-person visit before prescribing. Generally, however, medical professionals can prescribe non-controlled substances through online therapy sessions just as they do during in-person sessions.
