Deciding to seek therapy is a positive step in your journey. At times through the counseling process there could be emotional discomfort due to remembering unpleasant events. The outcome of your treatment tremendously depends on your willingness to engage in the process. There are no miracle cures and specific results are not guaranteed. I cannot promise that your behavior or circumstances will change. I can promise to support you and do my very best to understand your needs.

My downstream, "bottom-up" approach is largely built upon the premise of Parts Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, somatic techniques and Emotion-focused Therapy.
There is more to life than coping, and you are not a walking problem. You might be seeking counseling because you are suffering, but it is my hope that you find a life worth truly living. My clients struggle with everything from internalized hopelessness, people pleasing, "playing small," and social anxiety to anger, highs and lows, reactivity and addiction. These really are intelligent ways of adapting for a specific point in time, but they prove to be pretty maladaptive by the time the search for counseling begins.

Specializations and Interests: Hakomi somatic psychotherapy, mind-body connection, Internal Family Systems (IFS), Gestalt therapy, workplace stressors, career burnout, relationship issues, dream work, spiritual issues, transpersonal/psychedelic experience integration, and walk-and-talk therapy.
I’m for you if you are ready to turn towards and update the stuck patterns and outdated beliefs that may no longer be useful for you. Working together within a container of mindfulness, non-judgemental awareness, and loving presence, we will discover and transform the often unconscious barriers that hinder your ability to connect with life in truly nourishing and meaningful ways. I have a long-standing practice in mindfulness and Zen Buddhism, as well as a deep appreciation for and exploration of many other spiritual paths and traditions.

I practice from a Gestalt perspective, which means that I focus on the here and now.
Can't, never, shouldn't, these are some of the words we tell ourselves when we feel overwhelmed. If you've ever found yourself unable to sleep at night because of the endless barrage of insults you aim at yourself for things out of your control then it may be time to consider seeing a counselor. You may find yourself stuck in the same miserable cycles day in and day out struggling to break free and feeling hopeless. However, our brains are constantly adapting, changing, and learning and it is possible, with help, to change those negative cycles into positive ones.

I use a mixture of Narrative and Gestalt therapy to help you understand your life story and take better control of it.
We all have our own stories. Some are of resilience and how we overcome. Some are of tragedy and how we can’t move on. At the end of the day, I think all each of us wants is to be loved and accepted for who we are. No matter your story, I admire your courage for seeking the support you need.

I use a blend of music therapy, gestalt therapy (self-awareness), and narrative therapy (the stories we tell ourselves) to help clients process what is troubling you, create brave spaces, and build a life you're excited to live.
It probably hasn’t been an easy journey, but I'm glad you're here. Some days you feel a fog in your mind, a heaviness holding you back, or an inability to “fit in”. From starting school, changing jobs, coming out, or losing a loved one, somewhere along the way, your story got out of hand; you feel like you lost yourself. I will support you in rewriting your story and defining who you are.

Gestalt Therapists

What is gestalt therapy?

Gestalt therapy is based on the idea that to address unresolved negative feelings, emotions must be not only discussed but also actively expressed in the present moment. The term is from a German word meaning “whole,” and gestalt therapists believe that people should be considered whole entities made up of mind, body, and emotions. Gestalt sessions are rooted in the notion that a client’s total self must be discovered, explored, and confronted, so that they can take greater responsibility for themselves and their behavior, learn to satisfy their own needs while still respecting the needs of others, and reconnect with feelings they might otherwise deny.

How does gestalt therapy work?

Gestalt therapy sessions do not just involve talking with a therapist. Clients may take part in role-playing, re-enactment, or artistic exercises like drawing and painting, with the goal of becoming more aware of negative thought patterns that limit happiness. One common gestalt exercise is “the empty chair,” in which a client sits across from an empty chair representing a partner, relative, boss, or a part of themselves—and, with the therapist’s encouragement, improvises a dialog with it. The intention is to bring the emotions raised by past conflicts into the present and work through them in the moment.

How long does gestalt therapy last?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for gestalt therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. New patients should understand that it may take some time to become comfortable with gestalt exercises but once they do, they should expect sessions to extend for a number of months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions.

Does gestalt therapy work?

Gestalt therapy has generally been found to be as effective as other forms of talk therapy in helping people living with anxiety, depression, phobias, bipolar disorder, and substance use disorders, as well as helping individuals reduce conflict in relationships. Gestalt techniques, on their own or in combination with other therapies, can also be effective in managing physical ailments including ulcerative colitis, migraines, and back spasms. It should be noted that some people may have trouble adapting to gestalt therapy’s lack of formal structure or to a therapist’s close observations of their body language and emotions; others may struggle to commit to techniques that feel unnatural, like the empty chair exercise.
