I work with a diverse array of clients, including active and retired military, police, and other first responders, as well as victim/survivors of trauma, chronic illness, substance use, and the LGBTQ+ population. I have skills for the variety of concerns that my populations encounter, including, complex PTSD, trauma, severe anxiety, adjustment, re-integration, communication, TBI/ABIs, phobias, substance use, and mood dysregulation. Most importantly, I work with clients that come how they are, how they can, and with everything they have.

Do you have a loved one who is struggling with addiction or substance abuse? However, you seem to be the one who is suffering the most? Maybe you've tried everything you can think of to help but he continues to get worse anyway? Interventions are a successful way to get someone into treatment. In my experience, it is an effective modality approx 90% of the time. However, some families choose a more subtle approach centered on their behavior instead of his (the addict). There is no "one size fits all" approach. I work with the families of the addict or the addict himself to bring about changes in the family dynamics of this illness

I believe that every person can reach their fullest potential in life with the right support and guidance. There are times that you may feel anxious, depressed hopeless, and alone. In these times it can be very helpful to have someone to help you navigate your way through these challenges to a state of mental wellness and stability. Counseling can provide a safe and confidential space to learn skills and address feelings that likely impact many areas of your life.

We all have hurts that need attention and we do not always know how to do that. I believe we were created for relationships and at times those relationships or how we are going about them can be unhealthy. Due to that, we have adapted and learned coping mechanisms that have allowed us to function and move on. However, those coping mechanisms can stop working after a while and this is what creates an imbalance in our system that we need to make right or it can begin to generate stresses that spill over into other aspects of our lives.

My work with trauma, crisis, and substance use began in juvenile probation settings and it has continued into public schools and residential treatment.
Are you struggling to make sense of what you are experiencing & why? Maybe you are overwhelmed by your challenges (unaddressed trauma, substance use, etc.) and need help sorting out its complexities. I know that trauma can change your life in the hardest of ways AND I believe in your ability to heal from it. I believe in the importance of addressing underlying trauma that may be contributing to current difficulties such as anxiety, depression, relationship/codependency issues, substance use, anger, perfectionism, and more. I am trained in EMDR and use it frequently in the treatment of distressing symptoms for both teens and adults.

My focus is on reducing the negative consequences associated with substance use.
As of 8-5-24, I am accepting new clients. My approach shaped by own experiences and recovery, is grounded in harm reduction and mindfulness. Recognizing that traditional abstinence-only methods don't resonate with everyone, I've developed a practice that embraces each individual's unique path to healing. Integrating the practical framework of harm reduction with the transformative power of mindfulness. This allows clients to engage with their challenges in a non-confrontational, present-focused manner, fostering greater self awareness and acceptance.

I specialize in recovery in the broadest sense: recovery from grief and loss, substance use disorders (gray area drinking is a particular strength of mine), divorce, illness, life changes, relationships and codependency, depression, anxiety, and trauma.
The world we live in is challenging, and our attention is pulled in so many different directions that it is easy to lose touch with our own inner guidance and wisdom. We can find ourselves overwhelmed, distracted, exhausted, and disconnected from what brings us a sense of stability, purpose, and contentment in our lives. It is my desire to help you reconnect, discover, and explore what is truly meaningful for you, what brings you the most peace and ease, and to make authentic changes, so that you can navigate the challenges and joys of your life with awareness, courage, and a strong sense of self.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
