Who among us hasn't felt out-of-sync, overwhelmed or alone? It's not a matter of if something hits us, but when, and I'm not being pessimistic. What determines how well we ride out a crisis is how many healthy coping skills we learn through our life transitions. Even a loving family can’t teach what it doesn’t know. I want clients coming to therapy with me to know that therapy is not about changing you, but about evolving into your more authentic self, dropping unhelpful thinking habits that keep us imprisoned in old hurts, and learning to forgive ourselves & others for not knowing any better. “When we know better, we do better.”

I firmly believe that it is most important to create authentic connections with clients. Real healing only happens when both the client and the counselor can be their real selves. I work to create within therapy a genuine and safe space that is not always easy to find out in the world. I hope to help clients learn to create these safe places for themselves through improved life and relationship skills. My goals are the client’s goals as my client-centered approach leads me to seek a better understanding of the client’s worldview and how it interplays with their daily tasks and interactions with others.

Through counseling, clients can explore their current life situation and begin to deal effectively with the circumstances they are facing in a safe environment. I believe that counseling is first and foremost a relationship. As any good relationship is based on trust, so effective counseling is also based on trust. Trust develops when people feel accepted and supported no matter what their circumstances, and when they know the other has their best interests at heart. Honest communication is essential to the therapeutic relationship. For clients this means not withholding information that is difficult to discuss. For the counselor, this means giving honest feedback.

I have years of experience with families, trauma, abuse, children/adolescents, and depression and anxiety.
When you look up strength on Google, you find several definitions, but one stands out: the emotional or mental qualities necessary in dealing with situations or events that are distressing or difficult. No one can control nor predict when difficult things will happen, but it is a guarantee that challenges do occur in every life. Resilience is defined as the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness; is the ability of a substance or object to spring back into shape; elasticity. There is strength in your resilience! Every human being has been endowed with resilience.

“You don’t have to struggle in silence.” Life can be challenging at times, and those complications can be magnified if you don’t take time for self-care or bottle up your emotions. You don’t have to be super human and feel that you have to suck it up and push through. Your mental health can’t and shouldn’t wait. I want to help you and your loved ones be their best selves.

You were created for a purpose. There are times when this statement seems more false than true because life is hard and has so many challenges. Sometimes it’s even difficult to talk to family or friends about what you are experiencing out of fear of fear or rejection, judgment, or being misunderstood. I create a safe, nonjudgmental, and caring space for my clients to discuss those difficult experiences and challenges. I support my clients in working through their traumatic and difficult past, enveloping the strength and resilience to work through current challenges, and creating a promising, purpose-driven future.

What are the most effective ways to recover from domestic abuse?
Leaving an abusive relationship requires tremendous courage, so survivors in treatment should recognize that they have already completed the most important step. Still, the trauma of physical or emotional abuse can be difficult to process and overcome. Therapy can help survivors process trauma, grief, and difficult emotions, treat relevant mental health symptoms, and create a new framework for boundaries and relationships in the future. For some, support groups can also be an invaluable outlet for healing.
When should an individual seek help for domestic abuse?
Victims of intimate partner violence should seek help immediately. It can take substantial time, planning, energy, and courage to leave an abusive relationship, but starting the process—by seeking therapy, calling the domestic violence hotline, or simply confiding in a loved one—will help them get there. Those who have left abusive relationships but haven’t sought treatment can also greatly benefit from therapy to process and heal from the experience.
What are the consequences of staying in an abusive relationship?
Remaining in an abusive relationship has serious repercussions. In addition to the ongoing threat of physical danger and emotional abuse, research shows that intimate partner violence is associated with a range of mental health disorders including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and substance abuse. Therefore it’s important for individuals in an abusive relationship to seek help as soon as possible.
How can you get domestic abuse treatment for someone else?
It can be very complicated to identify and leave an abusive relationship; barriers include the threat of violence, financial instability, and family pressures. Those concerned about a loved one in an abusive relationship should talk to them about the situation, provide them with resources such as the domestic violence hotline, and introduce the idea of seeing a therapist due to their concern for the person’s safety and well-being.
