I can help you improve your parenting with younger children and how to communicate more effectively with your teen.
Are you in a committed relationship but want to handle conflict better or deepen your emotional intimacy? I teach Gottman Couple Therapy Interventions that work for emotionally healthy partners. Are you living or working with someone who prefers conflict over understanding, who reacts to your reasonable expectations, explanations, and suggestions with rage, gaslighting, and blame, who leaves you in a fog and feeling crazy? I will help you learn to trust your own mind again, to deal with difficult people, and to heal. I will help you develop confidence in your worth, good communication skills, and to set appropriate boundaries.

Trauma, anxiety or depression? If you are exhausted, hurt, or feeling unable to move forward on your own, I would love to walk with you to find relief. I am committed to bringing a Biblically solid session for those who desire a faith-based approach. Healing is about connecting with truth and finding peace. Counseling is most effective when there is a connection with your therapist in order to process through the issues you may be struggling with.

Life isn’t always easy. Sometimes, even the strongest people amongst us need a little bit of help to work through some of life’s more challenging problems. Everyone has battles to fight and hurdles to overcome at some point. Whether you struggle with anxiety, depression, substance abuse, or any other issue, you should know that there is hope for a better tomorrow. You might be initially hesitant to seek out help and support for personal matters, but when you do, you will feel confident that you are taking a courageous first step towards getting to a better place and being a better you.

My goal is to meet the mental health needs of children, adults, and families in our community by equipping them with the tools they need to improve their lives and empower the changes they wish to see. Having worked in child welfare for the past 25 years, I have become interested in the impact that trauma has on a person's' brain and their ability to cope with adversity in their lives. I hope to make a difference in our community through the healing of individuals during their most difficult times with grace and understanding of their needs and promoting healing, a positive sense of self-worth, and reducing depression and anxiety.

Having served children and families through the child welfare system for nearly 20 years, I am very interested in the impact trauma has on the brain and enjoy my work with children and adolescents as well as adults who have experienced chronic or significant trauma including victims of sex trafficking. We all deserve to feel safe with minimal anxiety in our day-to-day lives. By helping promote a positive sense of self and self-esteem, feelings of anxiety and worry can be reduced while increasing clients' sense of meaning and purpose in life.

You are one-of-a-kind. And so, beginning with our first meeting, I will be sure that I clearly understand you and your unique needs. Then, as your therapist, I will work to help you establish and achieve the goals that are immportant to you. Effective psychotherapy supports the emotional healing that leads to wellbeing. My approach includes what I call "relational reflective listening and speaking". It's a process that developes and nurtures the deep respect I have for my patients. In our conversations you and I together will discover new possibilities, new hope that heals the heart.

As a professional counselor licensed in 2001 and in private practice since 2003, I have enjoyed working with clients seeking healthy changes in their lives. I find that many clients already know the answers to their own questions and benefit most from collaboration on breaking through limiting beliefs and behaviors. While the decision to seek counseling can be difficult and stressful, many report that my practical, down-to-earth approach to therapy is very comforting. I provide services to adolescents and adults in individual, couples, or family settings. I will also be offering anger management group therapy in the near future.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
