A certified EMDR therapist, I also often work with clients to integrate trauma.
Grappling with depression, stuck in addiction, or home when you'd rather be independent? Living with the echoes of an unhappy or abusive childhood? Noticing you feel anxious and tired on a daily basis and can't figure out why, or can't seem to connect with others the way you'd like? Maybe you're not even sure what to call what you feel, but you'd really like to change it and find a way to feel like yourself again. None of these issues are pleasant, but we can work on them together. As a counselor working with complex combinations of addictions and mental health issues, I offer genuine caring and acceptance as you learn and heal.

I am trained in ART (accelerated resolution therapy), EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing), and have my LCDC to work with individuals struggling with addiction.
If you fight for your limitations, you get to keep them. You've made the first step for new growth, but may not know what's next. Whether you're an athlete struggling with the unique challenges you face within yourself and your sport, an adolescent struggling with everyday emotions and balancing relationships, or a male seeking to understand feelings of anger, shame, or communication issues, together we can create new possibilities.

Have you experienced an overwhelming event that has impacted your sense of self? Do you have images or thoughts you can't seem to get out of your head? I can offer EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) that helps you reprocess the experience in a way that allows healing while being in total control.
I firmly believe in meeting the client in where they are in their life’s journey, creating a place free of judgment or barriers. I believe everyone has the chance for personal growth and can benefit from therapy. The mind can create cognitive distortions, inaccurate thoughts that produce negative emotions. My belief is that challenging those negative thoughts at their onset is the best line of defense to keep you from reinforcing the negative thought pattern.

EMDR, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is one of the most helpful therapies for calming a hyper-alert response mechanism and allowing for more adaptive processing of life's big as well as small traumatic experiences.
As a counselor in private practice for over 35 years, I enjoy working with all ages, children through elderly persons. I have particular interest in helping people cope with and reduce anxiety, panic, and post-traumatic stress, often utilizing hypnosis or EMDR therapies. As a marriage and family therapist, I have experience working with couples, and also with divorced parents and children. I enjoy facilitating co-parenting of children of divorce, to help parents diminish or overcome differences and focus on their children's need. If you seek highly interactive, involved therapy in a caring atmosphere, please call.

Sometimes life may be moving too fast and adjustment to these unexpected changes can be difficult. When these challenges and undesirable stressors occur, we may need a little extra support and clarity. I have worked with children, adolescents, and adults struggling with depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, abuse histories, issues with self-esteem, and family conflict.

EMDR Therapists

Who is EMDR for?

EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.

Why do people need EMDR?

People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.

What problems does EMDR treat?

First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

What happens in EMDR therapy?

First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
