I’ve worked with adults, children, adolescents, families with a variety of backgrounds, and have extensive experience treating trauma, PTSD, depression, anxiety and child/adolescent behavioral disorders.
My philosophy is one of pragmatism, based on treating each client as an individual with specific needs and empowering clients through education as well as introspection. My greatest goal is to help others develop into healthy and whole individuals, and to embrace life’s journey. In the therapeutic process, I empower the client to discover their own resolve, while at the same time directing the client into a safe path of self-discovery.

Your plate is overflowing. You are stressed, overwhelmed and thinking "If one more thing happens..." Whether it's college, career, family obligations, personal health issues and relationship stress – the weight of it can be crushing. You can feel your marriage slipping through your hands. Deep down, you know you're at your limit, and almost at breaking point. You deserve a break, a chance to catch your breath and be truly heard. Life does not come with an instruction manual. We often ask ourselves, “Where do I go from here,” and that’s okay! It can be challenging to navigate life's curveballs because we don't know how or we don't feel like we deserve to find healing. Each person’s journey towards healing is different, but everyone deserves a space where they can begin that journey.

After many years as a nurse, a cancer diagnosis led me to change careers mid-life, and as an LCSW, I now assist others in overcoming their own life transitions and obstacles. Major life transitions, such as divorce, loss, moving, retirement, empty nest, debilitating illnesses, and trauma can cause upheaval, grief, and a tremendous amount of stress. I believe that life changes, even the difficult ones, can with intervention result in personal growth, and allow for greater self-discovery and awareness.

When a life becomes unmanageable, when a person feels powerless over their circumstances, when hope fades for whatever reason that is a place where a turn around is possible. Whether these problems are old or new, the fact that they interfere with your life is enough to want to do something about them. Depression, Anxiety, Conflict with loved ones, Grief, Relationship issues, Identity or a Spiritual Crisis can be debilitating, but they do not have to be.

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
