Trauma and PTSD Therapists in Rochester, MN
Via individual/family therapy, I work with children/adolescents/adults with MH, addiction, trauma, abuse, attachment, parenting, family/relationship issues, foster care, child protection, adoption, divorce, blended families, family reunification, & emotional/behavioral dysregulation.
I've worked with individuals & families via CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing)/ trauma focused therapy, family systems therapy, & play therapy for a variety of issues such as MH & addiction since 1998. I adjust/integrate therapeutic modalities holistically based on needs. I am respectful, laid back and humorous during tough work. I'm supportive & I encourage/challenge you to grow. It is difficult to change while health & wellness may require changes. I may use “tough love” while I am understanding and collaborative. Recovery/health requires action, growth, maturity, & accountability.

It's another day of the same thing, same unwanted negative self-talk, another day of what if's or what's next, and you hate the thought of the next day being a repeat yet the cycle continues anyways. Stuck. Burnt out. Drained in every sense of the word. It's gotten to be too much and you're sure you want more out of your life than this. I help individuals 16 and up who feel stuck in their unhelpful thinking patterns and are looking for a change. I also see individuals with trauma utilizing Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) with eye movements and limited talking to erase and replace distressful images and sensations.

These modalities are meant to treat people who have various symptoms of trauma, and I recognize trauma as anything that has been chronically or abruptly painful to handle.
I am most fulfilled when working with people who have experienced trauma and are struggling to participate in their life. This may be as simple as feeling chronically dissatisfied with daily happenings, or it could mean going through a painful transition, such as divorce or the passing of someone close to you. I love seeing how change in perspective or adding something simple can have a profound change in how someone experiences life. Those who have the best outcomes are willing to throw themselves into this experience, stand in their current Truth, and dare to dream of something better for themselves.

My approach to counseling and the therapeutic process includes approaches that include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) in treating anxiety and depression, and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) in treating trauma.
I work with adult and adolescent clients who are experiencing difficulty in managing anxiety, anger, trauma, depression and relationship-based concerns. I invite you to consider the idea that you are the author and director of your thoughts and emotional responses. Put differently, you have within you the power to rewrite the "script" on how you see yourself and the role that you play in your life, regardless of what you may have experienced in your past. In our shared journey, I hope to help you feel more empowered as an active agent of change in responding to suffering, depression, anxiety and trauma.

When should I seek treatment for trauma?
Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.
How long does trauma therapy take?
Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.
What happens if trauma is left untreated?
Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.
Can PTSD come back after treatment?
It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
