Therapy begins with a faith that you came by your struggles honestly in an effort to protect yourself and make sense of the world. My specialty is helping people recover from narcissistic, physical, sexual, emotional, and spiritual abuse. In addition, I provide treatment for depression, anxiety, trauma, military family stressors and veteran transitions into the civilian sector. I have a long history working with adults and children with trauma related issues, especially those involved in the Foster Care System. I have a special interest working with Adoptive families and I am trained as an Adoption Competent Therapist. I can assist with all types of individual and family issues. I believe counseling should be in an environment that is comfortable and assessable to those I serve, so my services can be conducted in the home, office, or telehealth.

I often use hypnotherapy to review options, detail goals, & resolve trauma.
Each client is unique regardless of the issue which motivates therapy. Meeting with individuals or couples, I work to clarify goals and generate 'action-items'. I don't tell you what to do or what is wrong with you. I help you identify what you want and what you need to accomplish that. I help you retrieve desired resource experiences from your learning history and get them available in the current life contexts where you need them. My role includes serving as a 'translator' for couples as I help each one hear and understand what the other is trying to say.

I share a combination of here-and-now skills to navigate the challenges, stressors, triggers, and/or difficult emotions that have been arising as you move through your life, and employ a number of evidence-based, trauma-focused practices combined with deep empathetic listening to help process and integrate the memories that still create emotional turbulence.
I specialize in working with combat veterans, healthcare workers, and first responders. Spending time in high stakes situations—where awful things happen without notice, and errors can have major consequences—often impacts the spirit and the nervous system. If you're having problems with intrusive memories, trouble sleeping, anger, feeling mistrustful and on guard where you used to feel safe, nightmares, anxiety, etc., I can help. There are some hard experiences in life from which we can recover well on our own, and there are others where we are most likely to heal and recover well with skilled emotional/psychological support.

I am EMDR ( trauma therapy) trained and sand tray level 2.
Struggling with negative beliefs, unwanted thoughts, past traumas, depression, or even parenting? Regardless, you don’t have to face those challenges alone. We are impacted by past events, oftentimes resulting in unhealthy coping mechanisms and negative core beliefs about ourselves and/or the world. Even when we “know” our behaviors and thoughts aren’t helpful, sometimes we just feel so stuck and aren’t sure what, if anything, will help. That's where I am come in: I’m here to provide a safe environment for individuals to overcome past struggles, challenge & replace negative beliefs, develop healthy coping skills, and reach healing.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
