I view counseling as a problem-solving process where we work initially on finding ways to help you feel you are no longer drowning emotionally, then begin a process of improving your awareness of the negative patterns of behavior in your life, and the thoughts and emotions that perpetuate those negative cycles. Once you feel more like you are on solid ground, we work to help you become more aware of the decision points when you can choose to stop from repeating old maladaptive behaviors and begin to develop new more positive behaviors which can help you find a path to a life with which you can be more satisfied.
Over the years I have developed competencies in working with adults struggling with chronic mental health problems, including depression and anxiety, with individuals dealing with the emotional impact of, and having to adjust to needed lifestyle changes due to chronic medical conditions or cognitive decline, and with adults with developmental disabilities.
I am an optimist at heart, and have always believed that tomorrow can be better than today. Due to their life situation some people have not been able to develop a belief in themselves and their own potential, so in counseling we'll focus on building the self belief that will help you break free of the emotional paralysis keeping you from a better tomorrow.
