Allison McDonald is currently only accepting new patients on a wait list. I chose to become a counselor because there is a great deal of hurt and pain in the world, but not many effective resources for healing. I have seen many hurt and angry people genuinely desire change but feel so stuck, they don't even know where to begin. Throughout my journey to become a counselor, I have learned that sometimes hope can be really hard to believe in and change can be really difficult. However, when hope is found it can be a great source of strength. When change is sought after, the stuck feeling begins to loosen and the true healing begins.

You feel different than others and there’s so much going on inside. Perhaps your thoughts and emotions are just too much. The people, places and activities that may have been fulfilling and safe in the past, are now what you would prefer to avoid. Others appear happy, but that same happiness feels beyond your reach. Maybe you recognize the need for some change, but enacting change seems impossible. Are you ready for your mind and body to be at peace in this chaotic world and to find your true self again? It is possible to access the wonder and creative energy of youth and to have a new understanding of your life.

I am passionate about helping my clients be successful! Many of us have ideals about what we want our lives to look like, fulfilling relationships, a sense of purpose, and a trajectory to reach our goals. And still we get stuck more than we need to. We walk through proverbial minefields trying not to misstep, often due to ineffective communication and behavioral patterns. Where did we learn these? Some genetics, some environment. The result may be depression, anxiety, personality challenges and an inability to experience healthy attachment. Acute or chronic trauma, past or present sometimes adds to the challenge of the life we want.

I utilize an integrative approach of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Somatic Therapies.
Life has taken you through many difficult paths, and you may be feeling discouraged and overwhelmed, uncertain of where to turn. I help people who are struggling with with life, experiencing difficulties with work or school, recently have gone through a relationship break, moved to a new city, among other life transitions. Sometimes when life gets more difficult we turn to alcohol, substances or other unhealthy ways to “escape”. I work with adults who are struggling with anxiety, depression, addiction issues, relationship issues and life transitions.

My modalities integrate somatic, trauma-informed, evidence-based practices of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Motivational Interviewing (MI).
I am deeply passionate about helping you work toward autonomy over your life, relationships, health, and goals. This looks different for everyone (as it should), but, for many, a starting point is forming a connection with your body; embodiment is absolutely possible for every body size and experience. We cannot exist without our bodies! I understand how co-occurring issues with food, body image, media, shame, and perfectionism can create feelings of disconnection, dissociation, and lack of control. I also work heavily within the music industry to help creatives build identity while setting goals and boundaries along the way!

I integrate attachment-based interventions and somatic exercises from a trauma-informed lens within the models of Solution-Focused Therapy and Narrative Therapy.
I hear folks on my therapy couch often ask these questions: "Why can't I get a hold on these anxious feelings?" "Why am I still repeating these same patterns?" "Why does (experience) bring up so much (emotion) for me?" I help adults and adolescents (16+) translate this curiosity into insight to develop emotion regulation skills, a sense of self rooted in integrity instead of shame, and more mindfulness in their relationships. I work mostly with anxiety, LGBTQIA+ issues, depression, emotion regulation difficulty, relationship issues, spirituality, and grief, including “identity grief” (grieving the life we thought we’d live).

In our work together, we may explore current and historical relationship patterns, somatic states, dreams, and expressive exercises to explore and manage current difficulties.
Life experiences can disrupt our connection to self—to psyche—resulting in loss of our internal resources. As a result, we can feel overwhelmed and disoriented when faced with challenges. I utilize several modalities depending on client needs, including existential, somatic, Jungian, and EMDR.
Grief, loss, disappointment, uncertainty. I have experienced each of these in my own life, and the complexity of navigating them is what led me to become a therapist. I know what it’s like to be left reeling from unexpected loss, and to feel frozen in grief. I’ve been disappointed by unmet expectations, and I have felt uncertain about the path forward.

I incorporate a combination of treatment modalities including EMDR, Trauma Sensitive Yoga, Psychodrama, Somatic Therapy, and Experiential Therapy.
My name is Tori Rogers. I am passionate about helping people move through pain, find empowerment, regulate their nervous systems, and connect to themselves in a more meaningful way. I believe, at times, we all feel like strangers to ourselves. I believe we are already whole and can feel shattered at the same time. I believe that the antidote to shame is self love. I believe that there is no better vehicle to connection to oneself than the natural world. I believe in chasing dreams. I believe that tapping into one’s intuition is the key to empowerment. I believe in holistic healing (which occurs mostly OUTSIDE of the therapy office).

Somatic Therapists

How does somatic therapy work?

Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?

Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?

Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
