Allison McDonald is currently only accepting new patients on a wait list. I chose to become a counselor because there is a great deal of hurt and pain in the world, but not many effective resources for healing. I have seen many hurt and angry people genuinely desire change but feel so stuck, they don't even know where to begin. Throughout my journey to become a counselor, I have learned that sometimes hope can be really hard to believe in and change can be really difficult. However, when hope is found it can be a great source of strength. When change is sought after, the stuck feeling begins to loosen and the true healing begins.

Are you constantly contradicting yourself? A part of you wants to grow and transform into your “true” self, but then you feel as though you are self-sabotaging again. You question how you can work on yourself when you are the one preventing the growth. Pablo Neruda’s poem "We Are Many" describes the internal conflict that many of us feel. As a psychotherapist, I noticed that my clients needed something more than just traditional talk therapy. This realization led me to become a Certified Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapist to help people “befriend” the internal conflict and embrace it with love and compassion.

My approach to therapy is rooted in connection and safety. I believe in the importance of the therapeutic relationship for healing and growth, and I strive to create a safe, accepting space for each of my clients. I approach therapy from a trauma-informed, psychodynamic perspective, exploring with clients how past experiences, attachment, and trauma have impacted them. I believe in the importance of acknowledging the whole self in the healing process, and I often incorporate ideas from Somatic Experiencing, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, playtherapy/ expressive arts, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy into counseling.

I integrate a variety of modalities to meet my clients needs, such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Narrative Therapy, Expressive Arts, mindfulness, somatic awareness and body-centered therapy.
As a counselor and a fellow human, I have found that deepening our awareness of who we are and the struggles we face, within a supportive, safe relationship can help us navigate life’s obstacles in ways that we did not feel were possible on our own. In time, we learn how to nurture and come home to ourselves. Counseling can be an empowering gift to the self. My therapeutic orientation is trauma, grief, and somatic-informed. I offer creative, mindful, body-centered, and nature-inspired interventions within sessions as ways of tuning into ourselves, understanding our patterns, and cultivating a life we intentionally want to lead.

As an existential/experiential counselor, I also specialize in couples therapy, expressive arts, trauma sensitive body work, mindfulness and psychodrama.
You many be feeling overwhelmed, isolated, anxious, depressed, and reliving past traumatic experiences, but hopeful for understanding, confidence, and peace? Through my work in sexual assault centers, domestic violence shelters, in private practice, and at Onsite Workshops I have learned how trauma is stored in the body, how it creates negative beliefs about the self, how it keeps us from living in the present moment and how it keeps us from connecting to those around us. Working with me feels like gentle confrontation and resource building in order to delve into past wounds with a deeply open, knowledgeable, and compassionate ally.

I believe using play and expressive arts in therapy can be helpful for all ages.
You hold a unique story. That story holds value and deserves to be told. I specialize in expressive art and play therapy techniques and I am honored to work with children, teens, adults and families. Most of my work focuses on serving the neurodivergent population and creating a wrap around service with other providers, but I also enjoy working with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression and life transitions. I also work directly with parents to provide educational advocacy and parenting strategies. I offer supervision for other counselors on their journey to LPC.

Healing is multidimensional, so I use many experiential/somatic interventions including EMDR, play/ expressive arts therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and mindfulness.
I work with kids, adolescents, and adults who feel stuck; they are experiencing symptoms such as anxiety, depression, relationship problems, and disordered eating. Many have carried the weight of traumatic experiences for as long as they can remember. Many feel that they spend excess time worrying about food and their bodies and find it hard to engage fully in their lives. They continue to feel out of control of their relationships, their bodies, and their emotions. They feel numb and isolated on the surface, and deep down feel hurt and helpless.

Do you feel like life has lately become a roller coaster? You find asking yourself, "when will this stop?" Life is like a journey and sometimes the path gets a little bumpy, but it does not mean that we cannot reach our destination. We might have to slow down at times and reassess our route and possibly take a side road, however, other times we just have to slow down and be there. Trusting can be difficult and at times scary, but it can also be rewarding. As a therapist, I have learned that relationships can be very powerful and can truly help a person heal.

We all experience some combination of painful experiences and traumas just by making our way through life, and these experiences can lead you to construct a story of yourself that is anything but empowering. My goal is to mirror your strengths and your worth back to you— to remind you of the truth, despite what your parents, partners, friends, church, and society have told you. Through a creative, holistic blend of art and talk therapy, I support my clients (individuals, families and couples) to integrate mind, body and spirit in service of deeper healing, connection, and personal + collective growth.

Expressive Arts Therapists

What happens in expressive arts therapy?

In an expressive arts therapy session, the therapist will provide the space and materials necessary to encourage the client to express themselves creatively. These can include art supplies, musical instruments, a journal, a camera, and more. The therapist offers careful guidance throughout the creative process, often noticing and talking about psychological issues as they arise. Many clients also benefit from the mind-body connection—the physical act of making art can help them feel more grounded and present.

How long does expressive arts therapy take?

An expressive arts therapy session will typically last between 50 minutes and an hour. Group sessions may run longer. Sometimes, a client might only need one or two sessions of expressive arts therapy in conjunction with talk therapy to resolve a psychological issue. Others might find a fixed number of sessions over the course of either weeks or months to be beneficial. The duration depends on the client and their individual needs and goals for therapy.

How does expressive arts therapy help children?

Creativity is an important part of normal child development. Expressive arts therapy proves a safe outlet for child clients to learn to identify their emotions and express them in healthy ways. In expressive arts therapy, children can build their self-esteem, discover more about their personality and strengths, and feel a sense of normalcy in an otherwise chaotic world. This therapeutic approach can be particularly helpful for children with developmental disabilities, autism, ADHD, speech impairments, and other conditions.

What are the limitations of expressive arts therapy?

Sometimes individuals have physical limitations that can affect their ability to express themselves artistically in certain mediums. For example, someone with hearing problems might find it difficult to make music. Sickness and mobility issues can make some types of art physically inaccessible (e.g., sculpting, dancing, etc.). Sometimes, clients are overly skeptical and have trouble letting go and engaging with the creative process. Individuals who require a higher level of care may be better served with other types of therapy.
