If I am working with an individual, a couple, or a family, I aim to hold the tension between what is and what could be.
Deep connections sustain and heal the human spirit. When we are deeply connected to ourselves, our values, our story, and our inner workings, we can thrive. When we are genuinely connected to others, to family, and to community, we can flourish. Often, however, disconnection and fracture prevent the kind of thriving that might be possible. Through my therapeutic approach, I aim to work collaboratively with clients to explore both areas of disconnection and suffering, as well as opportunities for re-connection, for the deepening of current connections, and for lasting change.

I have a special interest in helping people improve relationships, whether romantic, family or professional.
Do you need help bringing Connection, Peace and Balance to your life or relationships? Many of us do because we run from one thing to another, without enough of ourselves to go around. We can struggle in our life or relationships and need to regain our balance or even create a new one. We get weighed down by anxiety, sadness or feeling we aren’t understood. We have trouble expressing our feelings and needs or understanding the important people in our lives. I can help you feel heard and understood and strengthen the connections in your life. My goal is to empower people and help them discover how to live a life that feels better.

Therapy sessions with me often include inner-child communication, inner-family parts work, challenging stubborn self-beliefs with gentleness, and encouragement to trust your highest self and inner-wisdom.
Are you searching for a therapist who affirms your queerness, neurodivergence, radical beliefs, or creative mind? My therapy practice aligns with my personal values of anti-capitalism, anti-racism, anti-zionism, living unconventionally, and the power of queerness and creativity.  I support clients with a holistic perspective so that they may find the relief they need with relationship issues, family-of-origin conflicts, addiction, life transitions, meaning/purpose distress, and connection to self. My approach to therapy is different than the norm, as I believe support should reflect our authentic selves and our social realities.

I use traditional methods like Cognitive Behavioral therapy and Motivational Interviewing as well as evidence-based EMDR, Equine Psychotherapy, Internal Family Systems, and Narrative Therapy.
A trauma therapist, certified in EMDR and EAGALA equine therapy. Horses are metaphors for the human experience and how each individual interprets the herd explains how they see themselves in the human constellation Approaching horses helps us reflect how we approach our relationships and how we can face other big or overwhelming things in our lives. Since the solutions are personally experienced in conjunction with intellectual understanding, they tend to be deeper, more profound, and longer lasting. I walk with my clients through the trauma and to the other side of healing.

I specialize in Internal Family Systems Therapy, helping individuals and couples explore and harmonize their inner world.
It's my belief that within relationships we are both hurt and healed. I practice from a relational approach, specifically Attachment Theory. Attachment shapes how we view ourselves and others, and influences how we "do" close relationships. We may unconsciously carry feelings of anxiety, pain, humiliation, or even abandonment from our relationships. For example, early childhood experiences of sexual abuse, neglect, grief, loss, or vicarious trauma impact one's perception of safety and security. As a result, we may find it difficult to form satisfactory relationships in adulthood. Navigating through this process alone can be hard.Thankfully, you don't have to do it alone.

My approach combines Person-Centered, Family Systems, CBT, and trauma-informed CBT models and I adapt it to meet the specific needs and personality of each client.
Hello and thank you for stopping by. Counseling is a very personal journey and it is important to find a counselor you can trust and feel comfortable with. I always encourage potential clients to research, compare, and even email or call prior to the first session so any initial questions or concerns can be answered and addressed. Over the past 20 years both my training and experience in mental health have been in working with people with history of trauma, mood and anxiety type disorders, relationship difficulties, behavioral struggles, parenting issues, and life transitions.

Are you troubled by self doubt, questioning your or your partner's level of commitment, or contemplating walking away from a relationship? Perhaps you are feeling disconnected from others or frustrated by an unsatisfying sex life. Is the conflict in your family extreme? Are you struggling to coparent effectively? You may be single and exasperated by the drama that sometimes comes along with dating. Or, a parent who is helplessly watching your child or adolescent struggle educationally or in social relationships. If any of these statements resonate with you, I can help you navigate your journey to contentment, confidence, and bliss.

I weave together Bowen family therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), Somatic and Mindfulness work, Trauma-informed care and EMDR, attachment, Recovery and the 12 steps, Narrative, Art, Transpersonal psychology, Gottman, Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples (EFT), Imago, and more.
Hi, I’m Carrie. Whatever is happening in your life right now, we can face it with care and find authentic, effective ways to handle it, together. For over 20 years, I’ve worked with individuals, groups, organizations, and communities in making positive change. I have also experienced my own healing journey from childhood abuse and family dysfunction, so I’m intimately familiar with the terrain. My life’s passion is for healing trauma; transforming pain into wholeness; helping my clients develop their unique gifts and path; and nurturing relationships back to health; and that’s what I’ve trained to do.

Hi, I'm Elizabeth! I'm pleased to serve the Nashville community by working with individuals, couples, and family groups of every age and stage who are looking for compassionate care addressing grief, trauma, and sudden life changes. Sometimes major life shifts and painful losses can cause mind/body disconnect, challenges in aligning thoughts and emotions, conflict with loved ones, confusion, volatility, and loneliness. Integrating new realizations or new circumstances with how you've seen the world can be incredibly difficult but you are not alone. There is hope, healing, and a future worth shaping.

Are you constantly contradicting yourself? A part of you wants to grow and transform into your “true” self, but then you feel as though you are self-sabotaging again. You question how you can work on yourself when you are the one preventing the growth. Pablo Neruda’s poem "We Are Many" describes the internal conflict that many of us feel. As a psychotherapist, I noticed that my clients needed something more than just traditional talk therapy. This realization led me to become a Certified Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapist to help people “befriend” the internal conflict and embrace it with love and compassion.

I have a passion for supporting people in working through complex trauma, anxiety, and family of origin issues.
Many people come to therapy feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, worry, and insecurity, frustrated with themselves for repeating patterns that get in the way of having meaningful relationships. When you’re feeling stuck and hopeless, it’s especially hard to feel compassion for yourself. One of the beautiful things about therapy is that it is a space where someone else can hold compassion and hope for you until you are able to hold it for yourself.

Healing is multidimensional, so I use many experiential/somatic interventions including EMDR, play/expressive arts therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and mindfulness.
I work with kids, adolescents, and adults who feel stuck; they are experiencing symptoms such as anxiety, depression, relationship problems, and disordered eating. Many have carried the weight of traumatic experiences for as long as they can remember. Many feel that they spend excess time worrying about food and their bodies and find it hard to engage fully in their lives. They continue to feel out of control of their relationships, their bodies, and their emotions. They feel numb and isolated on the surface, and deep down feel hurt and helpless.

I am quick to laugh, love to learn, and value my relationships with friends and family most of all.
Thank you for your interest in my practice. Choosing the right therapist is undoubtably an important decision. In fact, research has demonstrated that which therapist you work with matters far more than the techniques or approach he or she employs. I work with adults of all ages and am especially drawn to helping people who are open-minded, motivated and eager to learn. I have a passion for helping people improve their relationships (both with themselves and others), and I also love working with people in therapy groups.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
