We specialize in a wide range of emotional and behavioral challenges with individuals from childhood to adulthood, couples, and families.
Therapy is more than talking about the past. It is a safe, non-judgmental atmosphere in which past hurts are resolved and healing takes place. Traumatic experiences can serve as blocks, preventing present and future peace.  At Wilkinson Family Therapy, we enjoy connecting with our clients as they travel along their journey. Through intentionality and training, we create a comfortable, supportive space for our clients to grow and process their experiences.

Whether it's anxiety, depression, self-esteem, stress, relationship issues, or behavioral concerns we will get to the root cause of your current struggles.
Life can be difficult to navigate and there's no user manual. Are you struggling with anxiety or depression? Do you have a child or teenager who is often mislabeled as a "bad kid"? Do you feel your plate is more than full? Are you struggling to manage it all at once? Life can feel overwhelming. You keep burying these feelings and telling yourself "I'm fine". You deserve time to slow down and focus on yourself.

Whether you are dealing with problems from a dysfunctional family of origin, women's issues, men's issues, marital issues, relationship issues, anxiety, depressed mood, ADHD, I seek clients who are willing to work to make changes in themselves through cognitive- behavioral counseling rather than those who only want others to change.
A large part of my practice centers around working with families and helping parents of children who may be having behavior problems at home or at school and working with the children and adolescents themselves. I incorporate child-centered play therapy with young children as well as Adlerian and behavioral concepts with parents. I am a licensed psychologist with Health Service Provider in Psychology credential, a Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor, and a retired MTSU professor after teaching in the Professional Counseling Program for 25+ years. In addition to helping families, I also work extensively with couples and individuals who may be experiencing a variety of problematic daily living situations.

"Speak in such a way that others love to listen to you and listen in such a way that others love to speak to you." We are all going through own our journey through life and many times the path ahead feels and appears impossible. Or maybe there is so much damage from a road that blew up on you and now you can't see which way to go. No matter what age, we can all find pieces of our life that we can control and influence positively even in the midst of impossibility. Anxiety, anger, family conflict, behavioral issues, blended families, stress management. trauma, depression, and the list goes on of things that can impair our daily life.

I provide play therapy & I have experience with parenting, behavior management, troubled teens, self-harm, helping kids and adults navigate the life changes of divorce, anger management with kids/teens, child abuse, anxiety/depression, & ADHD.
Life can be hard, and sometimes we need some extra help and support to get through those difficult times. Whether it's dealing with young children or teenagers, relationship or family issues, anxiety or depression, the challenges of college life or jobs, or the curve ball that life throws at us, it can be stressful to manage, and can be helpful to have someone outside of the situation to talk with.

If you have answered "yes" to any of the above, give yourself a shout out for finding a specialist who helps kids ages 2 to 8 years with behavioral and emotional concerns.
Have the terrible 2's never stopped or gotten worse after your child turned 2.5 yrs? Do you have a young child with more frequent, long, or intense temper tantrums and behavior problems than is expected for the child’s age? Does your child seem to get a thrill out of purposely annoying others, get in trouble regularly at preschool, or react with defiance and aggression to adult requests and limits? Or, is your child so anxious that you are dreading daycare or school drop offs because your child has to be pried off of you? Is your child struggling to adjust to a big transition like parents’ divorce, a new sibling, grief, or trauma?

Please Note: No after-school availability for new client appointments. Does your child struggle with expressing his or her emotions, experience meltdowns, aggression, and changes in mood? Do you notice difficulties with regulating emotions and/or energy level? Perhaps you are getting phone calls from your child's school due to behavioral difficulties and disruptions. Or maybe you are noticing behavior challenges and power struggles at home. As a parent, it can be difficult and confusing as to how to best get help for your child. You want to see your child thriving with the necessary support and coping skills to make that happen.

I use a variety of interventions including cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness therapy, positive psychology and more.
I have a passion to help all, but especially those struggling with behavioral issues and trauma. I understands the importance of getting ahead of behavioral issues in children and adolescents before they face legal consequences. I understand the importance of counseling following trauma. I could go on and on about the research backing the need for counseling in trauma. Behavioral issues are often rooted with some sort of trauma. I love helping others find their confidence, safety and mental health baseline.

Neurofeedback is a unique, drugless approach to addressing brainwave imbalance. The goal of Neurofeedback is to transform a dysregulated brainwave imbalance into a normal, regulated, organized pattern. By doing this, the brain becomes more stable and can operate optimally and efficiently. Research demonstrates Neurofeedback's efficacy in managing many neurological conditions such as ADHD, Migraine and Tension Headaches, Insomnia, Chronic Pain, Post Stroke Syndrome, Anxiety and Panic Attacks, as well as many others.

Behavioral Issues Therapists

What happens in therapy for behavioral issues?

No matter the type of therapy, individuals form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is often therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Individuals learn to identify situations that are especially troublesome for them and acquire new patterns of thinking and behaving. In therapy for ADHD, one of the most common behavior issues for children, individuals learn how to improve frustration tolerance, control impulsivity, manage attentional focus, and gain skills of self-organisation.

What therapy types help with behavioral issues?

Many types of therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Perhaps best-known and most widely tested is cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT), in which individuals learn new behavioral strategies and curb reactivity to frustrating or distressing situations that trigger disruptive behaviour. Anger, anxiety, mood disorders, impulse control problems are commonly addressed in CBT. Family therapy or parent management training is often helpful to reduce parent-child conflict and behavioral difficulties at home.

How long does therapy last for behavioral issues?

Among popular approaches to treating behavioral concerns, CBT is considered a short-term therapy intended to be administered in 15 to 20 weekly sessions. Parent training in behavior management, often used when the underlying cause of behavior issues is ADHD in children under 12, usually occurs in weekly sessions for 8 to 16 weeks. When behavioral issues stem from persistent aggression or defiance, therapy may last for months, and usually targets both children and their parents.

How effective is therapy for behavior issues?

Studies show that therapy for behavior issues in children is highly effective and may prevent the development of antisocial behavior later in life. Family intervention—parent management training or family therapy, both of which involve parents and children together—is considered most effective, notably for children under age 12 who persistently engage in aggressive, defiant, rule-breaking or other disruptive behavior. Whether provided alone or in combination with medication, CBT is highly effective in helping people regulate their emotions, and for people with ADHD, it addresses impulsiveness, hyperactivity and attentional focus.
