While I have experience working with various cultures, I specialize in working with black and brown communities as well as those affected by chronic illness challenges.
If you are experiencing feelings of shock, anxiety, guilt, shame and depression, allow me to address these emotions with empathy and care. Life can be difficult to adjust to when changes take place around you that feel "out of your control". I can help you sort your thoughts and behaviors to regain stability in your life. I use a person-centered approach to build rapport and strengthen a therapeutic relationship during a time that is challenging to you and often times scary. Give me the opportunity to help minimize panic and distress.

Offering sessions in Art Therapy to support chronic illness, grief and loss, and burnout. Throughout our lives, loss can show up in many forms: the loss of a job, the loss of a relationship, the loss of health, the loss of fertility, and of course the loss of life. All of these experiences can have the same intense effects as the death of a loved one. They can leave us feeling shattered, lost, and alone. Our modern-day way of life does not provide us with the rituals or guides we need to properly care for ourselves, find relief and support, and effectively grieve these losses when they occur. I understand, and I’m here to help.

Chronic perfectionism, while helpful in the short term, can lead to stress, relationship issues and chronic illness/pain down the road.
Are you feeling overwhelmed, stressed, anxious or depressed? Maybe you've been having thoughts of not being good enough or questioning your identity. You might be the kind of person who is used to having it all figured out and can usually manage things on your own, but lately it’s been feeling like too much to handle. Stress is starting to negatively impact your relationships, work and health. Trying to carry this weight can be emotionally and physically exhausting especially when you’re trying to do it alone. That’s where I come in.

I have a great deal of experience working with people who have chronic illness, depression, anxiety and co-dependency. I work with many people who are the caregivers to their families. I’ve observed that caregivers are often wonderful about taking care of everyone except themselves. As a therapist I will help you prioritize self care. I will support you in setting limits and boundaries and keeping that backbone when then temptation is to please others at your own expense. It is OK to say “No”. It is OK to put yourself first for a change. It is important that you feel seen and heard. Your feelings matter.

), adults born and/or raised in closed, authoritarian groups/cultic groups, and chronic illness.
I'm a Licensed Clinical Social Worker providing individual and group therapy. Therapy is not about identifying what you're doing "wrong" and "fixing" it. Therapy is a process through which we curiously learn about who you are and what you want for your life. Then, we look at what you're doing now that is working for you (moving you toward what is meaningful) and what you're doing that's not working for you (moving you away from what is meaningful).

Chronic Illness Therapists

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
