Accepting New Clients - Grief, low self-esteem, trauma and shame are a part of addiction. Whether you are living in addiction, loving someone in addiction or grieving the loss of someone you love - it is exhausting! What could have been done to prevent it? How do you take care of yourself and begin to heal when addiction seems to have taken everything? I am passionate about helping individuals/families create strategies to overcome barriers that keep them stuck in unhealthy thought patterns and choices. I have a heart for providing a safe space to heal and to begin to explore life on the other side.

Therapy is an experience that I have seen from both sides, as a client and clinician. This is why my approach comes from an empathic, relative point of view. My belief is that a client knows more about what they need better than anyone else. However, we all need guidance and assistance at times to help unlock our potential. I have learned that each client has their own set of core beliefs, maladaptive coping skills, and a significant barrier to obtaining the life we deserve. As a result, we can work to change these unhealthy behaviors one may use to numb and escape feelings that are destructive and harmful together.

Waitlist for new clients
In my 50+ years I have personally experienced a lot of things that my clients share with me. I am able to empathize or and the very least identify with my client`s needs. My approach is Person/Client Centered; Person-centered therapy uses a non-authoritative approach that allows clients to take more of a lead in discussions so that, in the process, they will discover their own solutions. The therapist acts as a compassionate facilitator, listening without judgment and acknowledging the client’s experience without moving the conversation in another direction. The therapist is there to encourage and support the client.

"Speak in such a way that others love to listen to you and listen in such a way that others love to speak to you." We are all going through own our journey through life and many times the path ahead feels and appears impossible. Or maybe there is so much damage from a road that blew up on you and now you can't see which way to go. No matter what age, we can all find pieces of our life that we can control and influence positively even in the midst of impossibility. Anxiety, anger, family conflict, behavioral issues, blended families, stress management. trauma, depression, and the list goes on of things that can impair our daily life.

In this life there is always something that makes us change. Human nature says that it is love or the loss of something or someone. If you think you need help to achieve your goals or make the necessary changes to be successful, you have to give yourself a chance. During therapy you have the necessary space to talk about the different barriers that are a challenge for you. I work with different people who are going through different personal situations, having challenges with their families, or struggling in their marriage.

Immediate availability-I work collaboratively with my clients to identify specific therapeutic goals that fit the individual’s lifestyle. I am very compassionate about helping people with addictions, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, relational conflicts, and behavioral problems. I understand that it can be difficult to make the time in a busy schedule for self-care. That is why I also offer virtual counseling sessions for all of my clients in addition to traditional face to face counseling.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
