My approach to psychological healing is integrative, mixing psychodynamic, mind/body, transpersonal, mindfulness, and CBT approaches to psychotherapy. My philosophy of therapy stresses respect for the client and the client’s experience. Therapy often involves the exploration of family of origin issues and the impact of old conditioning on current functioning. I also emphasize the importance of developing existing personal strengths and resources. I often use a personality system called the Enneagram to clarify client strengths and issues. I have expertise in mindfulness. See my website, www.musiccitytherapy.com.

My vision for counseling is to foster an environment that promotes the client's exploration of resolution to life's problems. I understand that therapy can be a difficult, yet rewarding process. I believe that the real work of therapy must be done by the client, and I work collaboratively with clients to identify therapy goals and the 'roadmap' to the achievement of these goals.

I love helping clients make sense of their hidden stories and experiences. Often, these create chaos, make us unsure, and throw us off balance. I believe that everyone needs a comfortable place to rediscover balance and wholeness through unraveling their stories. While I see a variety of clients, I love pre-marital therapy, married couples struggling with intimacy, as well as singles and women who have experienced sexual trauma. I also have experience with Homeschool culture and the struggles and wins of the music industry. I offer flexible office hours including Saturdays.

Life is full of twists and turns, filled with traumas and hardships that we cannot predict or control. We develop coping mechanisms to survive, to protect ourselves from pain and turmoil. These coping mechanisms may have served you well in the past, but now they may be holding you back, causing more harm than good. Through therapy, we can unearth these defense mechanisms and unravel the wounds that lie beneath. Traumas can build up over time, clouding our vision. By healing these wounds, you can begin to see yourself and the world more clearly, and shed the layers of protection that no longer serve you.

Training includes psychodynamic, cognitive, behavioral, and systems therapies.
You are taking a positive step by researching therapists to find one who will be a good match. Therapy is a collaborative process, so it's important to find a qualified therapist who will also be compatible. If you contact me, we would first talk on the phone, and if that seems promising, meet for an initial consultation. We would discuss more in depth your concerns, your goals, and then develop a therapy plan together, suited to your situation. I will select the interventions that will be most helpful, give you feedback, and try to facilitate open communication.

Psychodynamic therapy helps make sense of strategies you developed early in life, & how you've been impacted by significant relationships & experiences.
For twenty years, I've been helping clients navigate life's challenges - anxiety, relationship struggles, unexpected turns, grief, feeling stuck... Therapy begins with me listening respectfully & attentively to your story. We then work together to identify your strengths, as well as patterns that may interfere with a more fulfilling life. We'll listen for underdeveloped or lost parts of yourself that may need attention. My goal as your therapist is to help you make progress with the concerns most important to you, & support you in living a more joyful, empowered life moving forward.

Hi! I'm Dr. Michelle Blake. Both my master's and my Ph.D. are in social work, and I am licensed in both Tennessee and Indiana. My approach is based in person-centered therapy, although I freely incorporate additional modalities. I enjoy a variety of client groups, including life transitions, LGBTQIA, and adults at midlife and beyond. My basic approach is person-centered. If the client is interested, I like including writing and other expressive options.

We therefore integrate psychodynamic work within and alongside ERP, to foster deeper and more lasting change than ERP alone can offer.
We specialize in Rumination-Focused ERP for OCD and anxiety disorders. This approach focuses on treating compulsive rumination, and provides a highly systematic yet gentler approach to exposure therapy. RF-ERP can be helpful to patients who have not made significant progress in other types of treatment, including individuals with Pure O or Sensorimotor OCD.

I am a depth-oriented, Psychodynamic therapist.
I believe that some of the most sustainable human growth occurs via relationship. This is why I believe in the power of Psychotherapy: it can be a unique opportunity for healing, a process in which -- through genuine connection and honest feedback, we can begin to make sense of the way we have come to view ourselves, our relationships, our sense of spirituality and interconnection, and the world around us. Through our work together, my clients can begin to gain the tools needed in order to change that which they can control, but also genuinely accept that which they cannot.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
