Throughout my life, I've formed connections with people from all walks of life, nurturing a deep appreciation for the tapestry of human connection and the beauty of our unique differences. In the moments when we experience empathy and awe within our connections, we discover the potential for growth, self-awareness, and healing, even when life presents its most challenging moments. My therapy approach is centered around you. It's about facilitating healing through relationship, making meaning through self-awareness, and finding your unique strengths to help you live authentically.

In my 46 years of practice as a psychologist, in Tennessee, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and New Hampshire, I have had the honor and privilege of working with so many patients on their paths of exploration, personal growth, and healing. My approach is grounded in psychodynamic, existential, and Buddhist theories, with a focus on integrating mindfulness and compassion with self and others. It is my belief that the quality of the psychotherapy relationship between therapist and patient is the principal healing force in treatment. Thus, I do my best to form a good and ethical therapeutic relationship with each of my patients.

I invite all parts of your story into the room. I most often hear that what is wanted from therapy is hope and relief. Relief from anxiety, hope for your relationship. I believe you can achieve self-esteem, hope, and healing. I've seen it happen many times. Trusting this process is the first step. You don't have to do this alone. I can stand with you and guide you towards a safe and secure self within life's ups and downs. You can learn how to regain a sense of self, heal from the past, come home to your body, and create a life you find worth in living.

No matter where you are in your journey, I am here to support you with embodying wellness in all areas of your life. Together we can explore what it means to be who you are, reconnect with your body, commune with nature, learn new patterns of thinking, find your voice, and heal. My warm and grounded presence provides a safe space for you to explore how beautiful and amazing, but often times our wounded relationship to our physical selves and the more than human world can impact our relationships, creativity, general well-being, and even our ability to reason and learn.

My experience has also taught me the irreplaceable value of a strong therapeutic relationship.
Thoreau said "There are a thousand hacking at the branches to every one striking at the root." In therapy, I believe our most valuable work is striking at the root of issues rather than hacking merely at the many branches/symptoms of the root. This latter approach often leads to resolving one manifestation of a problem only to experience new manifestations down the road. Whether the symptoms are anxiety, depression, addictions, or maladaptive relationships, it is worthwhile to examine the deeper sources of our pain. One of my primary roles will be to provide a steadfast ground of compassion, patience, and truth for your work.

When working with couples and families, we explore past experiences and current relationship dynamics that lead to conflict and feelings of disconnection.
Therapy for individuals, couple, and families. There are times when life is painful and seemingly without answers, yet what seems most broken in us can be a channel for growth, even a source of strength we never knew was possible. My own healing through therapy and mindfulness meditation inspired me to pursue an MA in Integral Counseling Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco -- the first program in the world to blend Eastern philosophical and spiritual traditions with Western schools of psychology. Today, I feel honored to support others on their journey toward healing.

Counseling is a journey that deepens over time through the crucible of relationship.
I work with clients wanting to heal from all kinds of painful experiences and challenges in their lives. Often what brings someone into therapy, their current struggles, are symptoms of an underlying unresolved experience which has thrown life out of balance. Anxiety and depression, for example, frequently are a pattern of being stuck in a state of imbalance, following a significant loss, heartbreak or trauma. The goal of therapy is to restore the natural integrity and balance within clients, empowering them to lead creative and fulfilling lives.

The pace of modern life, its demands and technology, can occasionally overwhelm the most courageous and determined human being, and a sensitive soul can become even more easily derailed. Add to that our habituated tendency to numb our feeling selves and disassociate from our bodies, and it is no wonder so many of us feel out of alignment with our natural freedom, self-expression, creativity and joy. My work is about helping you return to this original state. The method? A context and relationship that value and invite embodied, sacred conversation to guide us home to our truest and highest nature.

My clinical focus includes grief and loss, PTSD, complex trauma, substance abuse, mood disorders, relationship issues & co-dependency.
Most likely you’re not surfing Psychology Today because you have nothing else to do with your time. Let’s face it: most of us don’t come into therapy seeking real transformation unless the pain of staying the same is greater than the discomfort that comes with change. To be fully alive means that pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional. Combining the knowledge of my many great teachers and mentors, as well as wisdom gained through my own journey, I seek to serve as a guide for those who have experienced profound loss, trauma and disillusionment so that they may create a new life narrative and truly be happy!

I believe the therapeutic relationship heals and will keep good boundaries while also genuinely caring about your well-being. I am a warm, intelligent, down-to-earth person who snorts when she laughs. I am interactive and fun, compassionate and heart-centered, as well as grounded and practical. I welcome all people from all walks of life and will allow your therapy journey to unfold organically, at your pace and with your power. I also give feedback and homework and will give you gentle nudges from time to time, if needed. Therapy is hard and fun and beautiful and painful. I hold safe space.

I find many individuals reaching out with depression, anxiety, grief, and family of origin issues in addition to a specialized population of creative clients, those going through significant life transitions, LGBTQA clients, and individuals reconstructing their beliefs and sense of self from unhealthy family systems and harmful religious/spiritual beliefs. I work with adult individuals, couples, and groups.  In addition, I offer uniquely tailored intensives and ecotherapy sessions and healing religious trauma groups for clients desiring an alternative to traditional, office based talk therapy.

If you are interested in working the deeper levels of personal growth, I specialize in Jungian dream therapy as well as teach Kundalini Yoga. Dreams are a reliable picture into the inner dynamics of the psyche whereas Kundalini Yoga focuses on changing the energetic patterns underlying emotional and mental states. This two tiered approach is highly effective for treating many forms of emotional imbalances, including trauma recovery, depression, relationship stress, anxiety, and reconnecting with authenticity and purpose.

I have worked with individuals and couples for over forty years, helping them to capitalize on their strengths rather than focusing on their problems. I see my role as a co-participant with clients in the therapy process. I seek to enable individuals and couples to develop their inner resources with understanding and caring support. In such a setting, my clients gain the strength and freedom to solve or manage their problems in creative ways.

As a pastoral psychotherapist, I help gifted, hurting individuals and couples, ages 20-85, experience relief from the loneliness and destructive behaviors that arise from trauma and addiction. I work with individual survivors of physical, sexual, and spiritual abuse, as well as couples in distress, moving with them through the cold shadow of death when there seems no way out, to find a way through. My patients discover freedom from anxiety, fear, anger, and self-hatred, and release into grounded ways of living. I help people stop running from their pain and shame and start walking in peace to make conscious positive choices.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
