Immediate appointments as of 02/16/24. As a counselor, I truly enjoy working with adults and children to overcome obstacles and situations that may have them "stuck" in unproductive and unhealthy cycles. I approach every client with respect and listen to their story to understand them fully and collaboratively work towards their goals. I believe the healing in counseling occurs in the process rather than the details of what has occurred.I see it as an honor to walk with my clients as they increase their awareness, improve insight, and develop into the best version of themselves as possible.

Our collective struggle is that we have inherited a world of imbalance and as such, imbalance lives within each of us. It is my belief that healing is done in community, and that true change can only occur in the space between individuals. Together, we will work to find equilibrium and healing amongst the madness. It is my goal to help clients develop and hone the best version of themselves according to their own vision. Through the integration of movement and the expressive arts, I seek to assist clients in rewriting their narratives in a way that embodies dignity and strength.

Life is full of twists and turns, filled with traumas and hardships that we cannot predict or control. We develop coping mechanisms to survive, to protect ourselves from pain and turmoil. These coping mechanisms may have served you well in the past, but now they may be holding you back, causing more harm than good. Through therapy, we can unearth these defense mechanisms and unravel the wounds that lie beneath. Traumas can build up over time, clouding our vision. By healing these wounds, you can begin to see yourself and the world more clearly, and shed the layers of protection that no longer serve you.

I love to support clients in navigating treatment needs, specializing in chronic illness, trauma, and anxiety.
The way you tell your story to yourself matters. - Amy Cuddy We each have a story to tell and that story creates how we see ourselves, how we interact with the world around us, and how we manage the challenges life places in front of us. I approach therapy from the viewpoint that our personal story matters and we can change and shape our story through the therapeutic process. I utilize narrative therapy techniques to increase people's ability to have insight and self-awareness. I am also trained in expressive art therapies using Archetype imagery such as tarot and oracle cards. I am Pagan and alternative spirituality friendly.

My particular areas of focus includes those that need to process the trauma of living with substance abuse in the home as a child, and those managing chronic illness.
I believe that everyone can benefit from therapy at any point in time. We can experience both immense joy and deep grief and trauma. Sometimes the latter overwhelms our ability to see the joy in our life or makes us feel like we are not living as we were meant to. If you keep feeling stuck no matter what you've tried to do on your own or in other therapies, that normally means there is trauma or pain that has not been processed yet. Enter me, I'm not like a regular therapist; I'm a cool therapist (I'm actually not cool, but I think I can be fun even when therapy isn't always the most fun). I want to help you feel unstuck.

Offering sessions in Art Therapy to support chronic illness, grief and loss, and burnout. Throughout our lives, loss can show up in many forms: the loss of a job, the loss of a relationship, the loss of health, the loss of fertility, and of course the loss of life. All of these experiences can have the same intense effects as the death of a loved one. They can leave us feeling shattered, lost, and alone. Our modern-day way of life does not provide us with the rituals or guides we need to properly care for ourselves, find relief and support, and effectively grieve these losses when they occur. I understand, and I’m here to help.

Chronic Illness Therapists

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
