You are not the worst thing you have ever done. This was a frequent refrain, spoken by inmates and staff during my 15 years working on Rikers Island. Patients who had committed the most horrific of acts - they too sought to be understood and afforded a chance to reenter the community. If we are being honest, we all have regrets, and most of us carry feelings of guilt and shame - proof you are human. These hard feelings serve a purpose, requiring minutes, hours and sometimes even longer days of soul-searching - helping us to learn the lessons, and to do better in our lives ahead.
But what's next? Adler said we need the courage to experience self-worth, have a duty to recognize and pursue our life-tasks, and to make our unique contribution to the community. Courage > Worth > Contribution - three crucial things to develop, nurture, and to achieve.
Working on Rikers Island and at a women's prison, crisis counseling after 9/11 and Hurricane Sandy, training at Columbia University, and my own personal tragedies have prepared me for this.
