There's a change in their sleep, eating habits, doing poorly in school, isolating from friends and family, showing risky or harmful behaviors, even possible suicide thoughts. Your child shares with you that they feel depressed, anxious and don’t want to go to school. You try asking them what’s wrong, just to be yelled, “nothing, you wouldn’t even understand. You turn to your partner for support just to find yourself feeling angry, emotionally overwhelmed, invalidated.

I have focused training and experience providing therapeutic services to adults, children, and couples. My experience spans several areas, including but not limited to domestic violence, crisis intervention, substance abuse, family and relationship challenges, learning challenges, problem-solving skills, building resilience skills, career and vocational guidance, anger and stress management, emotional triggers, and life and resilience skills. I am a 24-year Air Force and Army Veteran with three combat deployments, and I bring a unique understanding of deployments and family separation.

My training includes a MA in counseling, MS in marriage and family therapy and BS in human development and family studies. I have worked in the mental health field over 15 years and have been licensed since 2006. My areas of expertise range from community mental health to crisis intervention.

The ideal client is a one who participates in therapy with a strong desire to learn and create personal, and interpersonal growth. One that shows courage in reaching out for help, and acknowledging their imperfections as true strengths. They may be struggling with anxiety, depression, PTSD, trauma, relational challenges, interpersonal challenges, grief and loss, anger, substance use/abuse, or simply wishing to understand their own process better. Therapy is a process which must enlist mutual trust and respect of the client, and therapist, in order to create a refreshed perspective to heal old wounds and patterns.

It is normal to have challenges in life, and there should be no stigma attached to asking for help. As a Licensed Professional Counselor, my goal is to listen and gently help guide individuals through any turbulent situations that they are currently experiencing or that are unsettled from the past. I believe that challenges offer individuals an opportunity to learn more about themselves, an opportunity to become more authentic, and an opportunity to become more grounded. I am a certified EMDR Therapist and an EMDR Consultant-In-Training.

Tamara is a Certified Daring Way™ Facilitator trained by Dr. Brené Brown and her team. Tamara studied marriage and family dynamics in her doctorate program. She is certified in the Gottman marriage counseling method I & II and utilizes Sue Johnson's theory of Emotionally Focused Therapy for repairing attachment in couples work. Tamara is trained in EMDR therapy I & II which is used for treating trauma.
