In the face of pain we all have strategies to manage the discomfort, sometimes reacting in ways that feel out of our control. Many of us can experience a punitive, self-judging voice inside our head and disconnection from our body. I believe our symptoms -anxiety, depression, emotional reactivity, struggles with relationships, addiction, and stuck patterns— are our best attempts at self-regulation, adaptations we learned in overwhelming circumstances. These are learned responses that can be unlearned. They're communications from unintegrated/shadow parts of ourselves that can be welcomed as guides (sometimes reluctantly, painfully).
I honor both the wisdom of your survival strategies and your desire for change. Part of my role is actively attuning for co-regulation which allows experiences that are individually overwhelming to be held, together. With this space, we can bring the light of conscious attention to areas of suffering, for them to be felt, processed, & released.
Together we can practice tools to develop the inner space for holding discomfort, transforming self-criticism, reinhabiting our beings — opening to presence, joy, and connection.
