I have three areas of expertise - substance use, eating disorders and gender affirming care. Substance use includes anything from being curious about your relationship to substances to wanting to stop using completely. Eating issues can range from poor body image to binging/purging/restricting on a daily basis. In regards to gender affirming care - as a trans guy, I have a special place in my heart for clients who are exploring their gender/sexuality. Whether you are just starting to question or worried about coming out or need letters to obtain appropriate medical care - a safe place to process can be very helpful.

I utilize elements of motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, and psychodynamic theory to address the unhealthy patterns impacting your satisfaction in life.

I have experiencing working with adults who struggle with anxiety, trauma, chronic pain, and substance use.
Difficult life challenges can make us feel like we are in a battle with our own mind or body. You may be struggling with intrusive anxiety, traumatic memories, or chronic illness. And your methods of coping are not serving you - you feel so locked in avoidance, suppression, or distraction that you can’t recognize yourself or what you stand for. Your life feels centered on avoiding pain instead of your most important values.

I help adults (18+) manage major life issues/transitions such as depression and anxiety; substance use; medical illness (cancer and HIV); relationships; loss/grief; and job stress.
Hello. Thanks for reading about me. I’m a warm, down to earth psychologist with a passion for helping people. Staying present focused, we will center on keeping your hopes and dreams up front, while reducing distress in the context of a solid and genuine therapeutic relationship. We will work to enhance your understanding of the barriers that are keeping you from achieving your goals and learn skills to turn that understanding into strategies to better overcome them. While there is no quick fix to most problems, I use proven strategies (such as CBT and DBT) that will help you experience relief and progress relatively soon.

New group: I am currently forming a new group for gay and bisexual men who want to address their substance use issues and the way they connect to identity, sex, internalized homophobia, and other issues.
I am a clinical psychologist who has been practicing for about 25 years. I am very invested in the work I do and I believe my clients feel that from me. I work with people in a compassionate, nonjudgmental way. I am currently a candidate at the NYU Postdoctoral Program for Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis. My practice is on the Upper West Side and I am treating people in person and via telehealth. I see people for assessments, in individual therapy as well as couples therapy. I also am beginning some groups (see below).

My therapeutic approach is, above all else, strengths-based and person-centered. You are the expert in your own experience and what you need. Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
