If you have found yourself feeling stuck, pursuing counseling can restore balance and bring about lasting change. I take the time to get to know a client's individual needs and work to form a collaborative partnership to gain insight and achieve goals. Most clients find my approach to be strong on empathy and helpful in identifying underlying causes for current struggles. I work well with clients who are looking to process difficult feelings and gain perspective on themselves.

We cannot teach people anything; we can only help them find it within themselves. -Galileo. Struggling with thoughts that won't go away? Difficulty with focusing or motivation? Have a behavior that served you once and is now blocking you from reaching your goals? Maybe that is depression, anxiety, life changing transitions, or healing old wounds. Come have a seat at the table.

I have worked with behavioral health (anxiety, substance use); mood disorders including depression, Bipolar, and dual diagnoses; trauma and PTSD; and personality disorders.
As a therapist, I am most excited to see clients motivated to explore their unknown strengths, widen their horizons, increase their abilities to make informed decisions and lead a life of meaning as they define it. Everyone I have worked with brings to therapy a foundation upon which to grow. Regardless of the problem, an enhanced sense of self is possible. Instilling hope of something better in life is one of my greatest motivations, and assisting others in achieving their goals drew me to this profession.

I started off my career working with folks recovering from substance use disorders. Understanding that substances are not the problem, but the solution to the problem, my focus then became on underlying mental health issues that these clients had. These were often related to unresolved trauma, relationship issues, and troubles with intimacy/sex.

I specialize in working with adolescents and adults suffering from PTSD, anxiety, depression, ADHD, low self-esteem, and substance use. I've also worked with families and couples to improve relationships and communication. I believe the biggest factor to successful therapy is based on the relationship between the therapist and the client. I am able to use my own life experiences to help build this relationship and relate more naturally.

Dealing with the aftermath of trauma and the struggles of mental health can feel heavy. It may feel as though you are completely alone in dealing with the difficulties in your life, but it does not have to feel this way. I work with teenagers and adults who all too often feel alone and hopeless and may have adopted unhealthy ways of coping through substance use or other self-destructive behaviors as a result. I use a strengths-based, person centered, humanistic approach and have been trained in Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Taking the first step to address your trauma and mental health is scary, but I can help.

The most common struggles of the people I work with include Borderline Personality Disorder, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, struggles with assertiveness, gray-area substance use, and anger outbursts. The other mindfulness practices can help with managing anxiety, impulsivity, and intrusive thoughts. As your recovery evolves in stages, your treatment will too. We aren’t one-dimensional and your treatment won’t be either. As the expert, you set the pace of our work and what information about yourself that you bring to it. I provide non-judgmental observations and support with practicing what you identify as helpful.

Only then, can we replace negative behaviors that have stemmed from these traumas, together. Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
