I have 10 + years experience helping individuals navigate substance use disorders and helping those with loved ones with substance use disorders.
I believe every good therapist has done their own work. I have been a therapy client at different times throughout my life. I don’t ask my clients to do anything I haven’t done myself. Together we will work to identify the best approach to healing for you.

For many people, standard 12 step-dominated substance use treatment does not work. People may tell you that your problem is a lack of willingness, or that you are in "denial." But maybe you need someone to listen to you rather than talk at you. The fact that these programs do not work for you does not mean that you are not capable of change. It probably just means that you have not found an approach that addresses your individual needs and values.

As a psychologist, I help individuals manage a range of psychological and psychosocial issues, including depression, anxiety, trauma, stress, life changes, health-related issues, relationship issues, and substance use disorders.
When we encounter life stressors, whether anticipated or not, we experience a range of reactions. Many of which, we are not told how to deal with, yet are expected to manage. Mental health issues might complicate our ability to manage stressors, thereby worsening symptoms and making it even more difficult to handle both life and one's mental well-being. We sometimes feel as though those around us, despite their well intentions and support, do not quite understand what we are going through. We may feel unable to find our way, feel how we felt, or pursue what we hoped our life to be.

I’ve been fortunate to work with people from a variety of backgrounds, including clients with a history of trauma, substance use, depression, and anxiety disorders, applying my training and expertise to help clients improve their quality of life in both individual and group therapy settings.
I believe in working collaboratively to create a safe environment for clients to explore treatment goals and promote healing. Above all, my aim is to help my clients feel secure as they discover the unique tools that will help to improve their overall well-being. I incorporate an integrative, person-centered approach to work with my clients and explore goals for therapy. By utilizing evidence-based practices such as Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and Dialectal Behavior Therapy (DBT), I am able to enhance skill-building and improve emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness.

My varied experience over the past years has given a strong background in providing services to people struggling with severe mental illness, personality disorders, developmental disabilities, substance use issues, eating disorders and general difficulties with life transitions.
The Therapist for People Who Don't Like Therapy... My biggest goal in therapy is to get you out of my office and back into your life! With that said, I have found that most people, at some point in their life, could benefit from some professional listening and feedback. Our friends and family are great sources of support, but are often too closely involved to provide the kind of unbiased perspective that we need to help us out of a rut or to enact the true change that we really desire.

My name is Ciara Swan (pronouns: she/her/hers; they/them/theirs) and I am a doctoral level clinician in training. I have experience using art therapy to support transitional-aged youth struggling with mild to severe substance use, and I have a keen interest in supporting clients challenged with anxiety and depression. An ideal client would be someone who is willing to confront their challenges and be open to feedback. I strive to establish strong rapport with my clients, which can be a challenging but rich and rewarding process. Therapy comes with uncomfortable work, but a client's willingness to be vulnerable and brave is what will

I specialize in harm reduction and moderation management, so if your drinking is problematic but not "alcoholic", this may be right for you. Ambulatory opiate detox and out of state or criminal justice assessment services available. Confidentiality is assured with a discrete private office or secure video sessions.

I understand the fear, anxiety, hopelessness, and discouragement of repeating the same cycle over and over again. Drinking too much and embarrassing or humiliating yourself often feels like it is damaging your soul. You keep trying to make changes but don't feel like you can let yourself down anymore. It's time to break this vicious cycle and you don't have to do it alone. I have been helping good people just like you make positive changes with their substance use for over a decade. You can break free and give yourself and your family the life you deserve. Stop letting substances hold you back from achieving your potential.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
