Those of us who were raised in chaotic, abusive, or neglectful families can experience lingering effects. Whether a parent had a mental illness, abused substances, or was otherwise unable to provide a safe, stable, and nurturing environment, developmental trauma (DT) can occur. Events that happen to us during formative years (particularly emotional abuse/neglect) affect attachment, brain development, and the ways we perceive the world. Although outwardly successful, we often struggle with codependency, negative self-views, and patterns of behavior learned in dysfunctional homes. This can leave us exhausted and feeling hopeless.

I enjoy helping individuals navigate unhealthy or toxic relationships and create new patterns that align with their goals and values. Whether you're facing codependency, poor boundaries, abuse or lacking communication skills, I can help guide you on a path towards freedom and peace. In addition to helping clients navigating difficult interpersonal relationships, I also help those struggling with anxiety, depression, and difficult life transitions. Stressed out? Overwhelmed? Wondering how to find your way back to a life you enjoy living instead of just going through the motions? As adult women we tend to take on too much and put everyone and everything before ourselves. We often feel depleted and want life to be different, but we keep doing the same thing. As a college student, stress and unhealthy relationships become your norm. As a teenager, insecurities, stress, and social media put you on a path filled with anxiety, depression, and self doubt. I'd like to help you get back on track, find some inner peace amidst all the chaos, and have fun along the way.

For the last 32 years I have had the privilege of walking with individuals and families through their most difficult times; trusted with their personal stories and pain. Through these journeys, I have witnessed miracles of growth and healing. Deciding to begin therapy can be a big step and it is important to work with a counselor you feel comfortable with. Therefore, I begin with a brief phone conversation where you are able to ask questions before scheduling an appointment.

My approach to counseling reflects my personal belief in the power of God to bring healing; that healing comes from truth and truth comes from knowing The Truth. I work with individuals from a variety of cultures who want to thrive in our current society while holding on to the cultural nuances that have defined who they are. I help people achieve the goals they have for their life and their relationships in ways that are consistent with their values and faith.

The most important thing I convey to clients is "you don't have to live like this". You don't have to just "deal" with the constant nagging doubt of OCD. You don't have to abide the nonstop pressure of anxiety. You don't have to put up with the flashbacks and hyper-vigilance of trauma. No matter how the pain of OCD, anxiety and/or trauma is affecting you, there are ways to fight back, survive and excel. While I am most passionate about OCD, anxiety and trauma, I also work with depression, attachment disorders, codependency, relationship, and family issues.

I enjoy working with adults in the areas of codependency, boundary issues, life transitions and anxiety and/or depression. I find that many of my client's are often characterized as "people pleasers" and often spend so much time focusing on the happiness of others and "keeping the peace" that they neglect their own needs. Some learn these behaviors through childhood as a means of survival and some through romantic relationships. Though this may seem like the 'right thing to do,' no one can pour from an empty cup. Therapy can be a time to focus on yourself and regain your happiness.

Hi there, I’m Alex! Starting therapy can be daunting experience. It’s important to find a therapist that you feel comfortable with and is the right fit for your needs. I believe that providing a safe, non-judgmental space for others to truly be themselves and explore their inner world is an authentically beautiful and healing experience. Life gets hard, and you don’t have to journey alone! I believe cultural sensitivity is crucial in a healthy therapeutic relationship. I thoroughly enjoy working with LGBTQIA+ individuals and other populations that may experience cultural impacts on their mental health.

Online Therapists

Is online therapy as effective as in-person?

Numerous studies suggest that online therapy can be as effective as in-person therapy. However, further research is needed to determine if online therapy provides the same benefits across all client populations. Individuals with severe mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, or those who may benefit from in-person check-ins, like those with eating disorders, may not experience the same level of benefit from online therapy. Nonetheless, the success of online therapy, much like in-person therapy, often hinges on the quality of the therapeutic relationship between the therapist and the client rather than the specific modality of therapy used.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of therapy conducted online?

One of the main advantages of online therapy is its convenience for both clients and therapists. It also allows clients who require specialized therapy to access a wider range of professionals than they could with only in-person sessions. Additionally, online therapy may be a more affordable option in some cases and often offers the same insurance benefits as in-person therapy. However, online therapy may not be suitable for everyone, especially those who value face-to-face interaction with a therapist. Therapists may find it more challenging to assess clients accurately in an online setting due to reduced nonverbal cues on camera. There is also the increased risk that disruptions caused by external factors, such as technology malfunctions, can hinder the therapy session. For these reasons, many therapists offer a "hybrid" therapeutic approach, alternating between seeing clients in-person and online.

Is online therapy suitable for children and adolescents?

Just like with adults, the accessibility and convenience of online therapy can greatly benefit children and adolescents. In fact, children and adolescents may be more accustomed to navigating online platforms than older adults, making online sessions feel more natural for them. Teens might also be interested in using additional online tools, such as therapist-recommended apps, as an adjunct to online therapy sessions. Apps for developing CBT skills, practicing mindfulness exercises, or tracking thoughts and moods can be helpful for teens receiving therapy. However, it's important to note that not all therapeutic modalities are well-suited to online therapy, especially those used with younger children. For example, play therapy, which helps younger children express their emotions, often requires in-person sessions to be fully effective.

Can I receive prescriptions and medication management with online therapy?

The ability for psychiatrists to prescribe medications through online therapy varies based on the medication and the states where the medical professional and client are located. While many prescribing regulations were relaxed during the COVID-19 pandemic, some states still enforce rules, especially concerning controlled substances, which may mandate an in-person visit before prescribing. Generally, however, medical professionals can prescribe non-controlled substances through online therapy sessions just as they do during in-person sessions.
