Supervised by Dr. Lutka, I am a Psychiatric Physician Assistant who had previously been working as a Hospitalist. Studying Internal Medicine, I saw first hand how our minds, bodies, and souls are so interwoven and the profound impact that each health component has on the others. For example, our physical health significantly impacts our mental health, and vice verses. Here at Journey Healthcare, we want to help you to utilize therapy in combination with medications, if necessary, to help you reach your most successful potential to lead a fulfilling and happy life.

Anxiety is everywhere these days. We're all making our way through a sea of unknowns, and our children are along for the ride. I believe that YOU, a parent or caregiver, have been doing the very best that you can for your child. I also know that with limited resources, a lack of external support or your own mental health strain, supporting a struggling child often feels impossible. If you’ve exhausted a list of ideas to help your child with little progress, let me join you. Together we can redistribute that emotional weight you’re carrying and give your child a big wide space to heal and grow.

One of the bravest things you can do is to take a deep dive into understanding your story. Your story may be filled with emotional turmoil, trauma, and overwhelming anxiety on how you’ll be able to pull through to the other side. Take a deep breath, relax, and let’s rewrite your story together. I invite you to talk about the taboo things (no topic is off limits), become comfortable in your own skin, and take the journey with me through self-exploration to finally arrive at your authentic self.

When the burdens of life leave us feeling like it is a struggle to breathe as we are slowly sinking in quicksand, it can feel impossible to recognize any other way to live, think, and/or function. As a therapist, I believe that listening is paramount to learning and better understanding an individual so that trust and genuine care remain cornerstones of the therapeutic process. Whether it is intrusive thoughts, external stressors, or anything that causes you to feel unsettled, I want us to collaborate so that you will be empowered to discover your own innate strengths.

I specialize in treating people with anxiety disorders. I have worked as a clinician in hospitals, mental health centers and in private practice since 1978. I believe in treating the whole person; body, mind, spirit and emotion. I believe a balance of all four is necessary for health. I believe in and practice both dynamic and cognitive-behavioral interventions as well as mindfulness which emphasizes acceptance, compassion for self and others and meditation. I work diligently in the service of my client's recovery and feel great joy in their success. I treat OCD, trauma and panic disorder.

Participating in therapy can help individuals to be healthier, happier and improve their overall quality of life. The therapeutic setting is a great place to explore the connection between thoughts/feelings/behaviors, identify triggers/patterns, develop new coping skills, learn to improve interpersonal relationships, process trauma and loss, and increase self-awareness in order to become the very best version of one’s self. As an LPC and art therapist, I use an eclectic approach to therapy aimed at trying to align clients with interventions that fit best for them as individuals.

I have had the privileged to work with a diverse patient population. My favorite thing to see in a patient is a desire to get well and have a fulfilling life. If that inner drive is there, at Journey, we can help you. It is such a joy to see people come from difficult situations, a slew of other providers with a medicine list a mile long and learn how to become empowered over their life again. I believe all perceived mistakes are attempted solutions that need more education. I teach people to go from a space of helplessness and shaming to pride and awareness.

Are you feeling lost or alone? Do you struggle with emotions of sadness, anxiety, or grief? Have you been physically or sexually abused or a victim of domestic violence? Maybe, you're feeling stuck or are struggling with a life transition and don't know where to turn? It can be hard to ask for help, but a little help is often what we need in order to connect with our own inner capacity to cope and heal. I have experience helping children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly to manage life's difficulties and work toward health, happiness, and acceptance.

Struggle is something that I believe every single living thing experiences. It is a concept that can bring us into some of our hardest moments in life, but it also presents the opportunity to connect, grow, and learn. I believe that confronting our struggles and working through them is one of the most valuable journeys that life brings. We all struggle in different ways and at different times. As a therapist, I hope to be there with you in whatever your struggle may be. I believe in meeting people where they are at and providing comfort, support, and empowerment. I follow a humanistic approach that caters to each individual's needs.

Anxiety, depression, trauma, interpersonal struggles, and life transitions are just some of the issues we face daily that can hold us back from reaching our goals and our true selves. Children, teens, and young adults are exposed early on to enormous amounts of pressure like bullying, mood and behavior changes, and self esteem concerns. I am passionate about helping children, adolescents, and adults jump off the merry-go-round they're trapped on and create new, positive, and healthy ways to cope with life's unpredictable twists and turns or even feeling stuck in the same old. Allow me to understand you and ensure you have a voice.

I'm Vania Brister, and I've come to realize that this field found me, shaping my path in ways I couldn't have predicted. From childhood, I embraced my quiet nature, despite enduring teasing and shame for it. But through those experiences, I learned something invaluable: the power of listening. Being a quiet observer taught me that great listening requires silence, and the ability to understand and support others became my superpower. It brought me joy to be a source of support for family, friends, and even strangers. In my practice, I aim to create a safe haven where individuals and families can express themselves freely.

It's wonderful you are taking the time to poke around and find a therapist that will be a fit for you. Honestly this may be one of the most important pieces in the whole process of therapy - that you and the therapist 'click' and are able to co-create a trusting, collaborative relationship. My hope is that our work together brings more groundedness and balance into your life. And this journey looks different for each of us. It’s an active process, discovering unhelpful patterns of physical sensation-emotion-thought reactivity and then co-creating mindful, body-based practices that draw on your inner strengths and facilitate healing

Life can often be overwhelming and emotionally draining. Creating an inclusive environment is at the core of my social work practice. It is imperative to me that my clients feel heard, valued, and respected for their unique experiences and perspectives. It is through this safe space that we can begin to address life’s challenges.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
