I am a psychotherapist with 35+ years of experience. I believe the relationship between therapist and client is unique. This uniqueness develops when a person knows there is confidentiality and can safely talk about anxieties, sadness, loss and whatever is interfering with the person they wish to be. I have always felt clients personal problems are not the insurance companies business. Due to my experience I do not accept insurance and payment is out of pocket. Years ago before the pandemic I responded to a post from a therapist stating skype sessions were as beneficial as in-person sessions. The pandemic forced online sessions
Although psychodynamically and family trained I am eclectic in my approach. People are different and there are times I switch to a cognitive approach. I always take family history as it isn't unusual for our developmental years inform who we become as adults. This insight can be helpful. I guide people so they can grow.
I've been advised that my years of experience are not valued. I chuckle about that. Perhaps jargon changes, approaches are tweaked a bit. Nothing in my opinion replaces excellent training, ongoing consultation with mentors, seminars ,life experience and empathy. My personal commitment to my own therapy gave me respect for my profession. Change is achievable
