I am an Associate Professor of Harvard Medical School and I study psychological growth, posttraumatic stress, and depression. My clinical work is inspired by my research. Generally speaking, my work begins in a humanistic-existential orientation. I believe in the client's potential for growth. When I enter a treatment, I listen to the individual, relational, and cultural narratives I am told; to the layers in each narrative; to my own reactions. I focus on feelings, unfulfilled desires, maladaptive defenses, and unsatisfying means of relatedness with past and present others - all of which generate anxiety.
In the treatment the clients gains affective knowledge that goes beyond insight with the power to promote change. My approach always remains open to change with the client's diagnosis, presenting problem, and treatment goals. The goal of the treatment is to allow the client to better know themself and enter a different life.
I also work at Massachusetts General Hospital. My research is on biological and psychological mechanisms of adaptation to highly-stressful events. The work has been published in leading professional journals and covered by Psychology Today. I integrate my research background in my clinical work with the hope to improve the well-being of my clients.
