I especially enjoy working with those who have experienced anxiety, depression, self-esteem issues, relationship stressors, work and school stress, trauma, childhood sexual abuse, or emotional and physical abuse.
Life can bring overwhelming challenges. I understand the struggle and mixed emotions. Choosing a therapist during this time can also be difficult but, together, we can work to make this time manageable as we gain understanding of daily conflicts and concerns. I begin each therapeutic relationship based on empathy, compassion and trust while providing a comfortable, safe environment to establish goals, build healthier relationships and achieve life changes. I use resources from cognitive behavior therapy along with other integrative approaches to meet individual needs and help find productive solutions to daily struggles.

Asking for help is a strength, not a weakness. That knowledge is what led me to become a therapist ... how effective and life-changing therapy can be. I start where you, the client, is and we make a treatment plan together to reach the goals you would like to achieve. We will develop a working hypothesis that may change over time as new information is obtained. Many mental health issues begin with an event and the mental health issue, be it anxiety, panic attacks, depression, anger, unrelated phobia, facial tic, chronic pain, avoidant behavior, dysfunctional relationship pattern, stress and/or insomnia is the resulting symptom.

Through the ups and downs of life, one thing remains a constant— you. I help my clients foster a relationship with themselves with a sense of curiosity, acceptance, and grace. Life can be tough and confusing, but you are strong and resilient. I want to walk alongside you, hear your story, and offer a safe space for expression and exploration. It is my belief that people make sense- the person who starves themselves, or isolates when sad, or can’t find relief from that nervous feeling in their stomach, all make sense. You are not alone. Let’s walk towards healing together.

I was drawn to counseling as a career because of the incredible personal experience I have had with healing in community. We are not meant to go through life alone. My passion and heart is to help others succeed and thrive in life. I want to partner alongside and support clients in their journey towards holistic health (mind, body, spirit) and healing. We are often wounded in relationships and the therapy relationship can be an incredible restorative and corrective tool.

We all experience relationship conflict, overwhelming/traumatic events, and internal struggles. My therapeutic approach is focused on helping my clients to better understand themselves and how their history has impacted their present. Along this journey, I empower clients to use certain tools and resources to move forward into the vision that they want for their future. I approach experiences and beliefs from a trauma lens, utilizing EMDR to reduce distress, regulate nervous system functioning, update neural pathways, and bridge the gap between the brain and body.

As a counselor, I believe that no person is beyond helping, regardless of prior therapy experience, life history, or their current situation. I provide a safe and welcoming environment in which people are able to talk without fear of judgment, and can feel heard and validated. I believe in treating the roots of the issues, rather than providing Band-Aids for symptoms, and am passionate about empowering individuals to recognize their own strengths and abilities. I provide therapy from an interpersonal perspective, in which I believe relationship is the catalyst for healing.

I love working with a wide variety of clients, but I specialize in working with depression, anxiety, and/or survivors of domestic violence. My education combined with personal and professional experience has opened the door for me to work with clients who may be trying to leave an abusive relationship or who are trying to discern if they are are in an abusive/unhealthy relationship. That said, these are not the only issues I help clients with. If you have questions about how I work or the types of clients I see, feel free to send me an email. I’m happy to chat with you.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
