Sometimes life can be overwhelming and frustrating with the uncertainty of what to do next. Having the courage to come to counseling is the first step to get some of those questions answered. In the beginning, building a good rapport with clients is my focus to help them feel comfortable in the process. I can help clients work through the difficult things that are uncomfortable to think about or even to talk about. Clients do feel rewarded once they do, and they can make the changes they want in their lives. A diagnosis does not have to define as a person, but it can help them live their best life.

"Effective therapy not only helps people resolve their immediate problems, it teaches them how to build long-lasting, greater life satisfaction." Bring yourself one step closer to having the control over your life that will put you on a positive path to growth and well-being. I practice a "Positive Psychology" approach which is founded on the belief that people WANT to lead meaningful and fulfilling lives.

I believe one of the most challenging things that you can do is to begin to understand your own story. We gather a lifetime of experiences which affect us in different ways. Holding on to past negative experiences prevents further exploration and healing. In a sense we get stuck in patterns of thinking and relating that hold us back from true potential and empowerment of our best assets.

Life hands you all sorts of experiences that shape the lens through which you see the world. Our bodies and brains naturally adapt to these experiences, but can sometimes result in mental health challenges including anxiety, depression, trauma, and adjustment disorders. Support can help you learn to set boundaries, and work through a loss or life transition - it could be changing a pattern of behavior that is keeping you stuck. My goal is to help you feel better so you can live better.

I believe individuals have greatness within themselves; it is important to work with a counselor who sees yours, even if you or others do not. I will strive to help you feel comfortable so you can be honest with me and yourself, about your problems, mood complaints or substance use. Often individuals already know what needs to happen, but do not know how to get there. I will meet you where you are, while guiding you to where you want to be.

I believe that seeking counseling when aspects of our lives become challenging is a courageous and important act of acknowledging and validating the dignity of self. I work with adult clients (18+) who experience depression, anxiety, borderline personality, trauma and grief. At times our assumptions and interpretation of our thoughts, emotions and experiences can contribute to emotional suffering and interfere with our relationships with the people we love. As we try to do the best we can to cope with these problems we can also lack the tools necessary to effectively solve these issues.

The best way I can describe myself is to use music. I believe music really IS the soundtrack to our lives but it can also express things we may not have the words ourselves. It speaks to our mood and what is happening in our lives or the world for that matter. I feel I am a nice mix of every genre; I find a commonality within me with each genre of music, much like people. I feel I can find our common ground and we will work well together. Just some of the tools you can expect from me will be active listening, role playing, and using the tools you already bring to the session which we will identify.

Growing up in a rural community, I saw firsthand the lack of mental health resources and the stigma that surrounded mental illness. This experience sparked a desire to advocate for those struggling with mental health challenges. It became my passion to not only provide support, but also to break down the barriers that prevent people from seeking help. I believe it’s essential for everyone to know that it's okay to reach out for support, no matter the situation. My goal is to create a safe and welcoming space where people feel understood and empowered to become the best version of themselves—mentally, emotionally, and physically.

Children have a outdated stereotype of being so resilient they can 'bounce back' from anything. This isn't always true. Children display reactions to traumatic experiences differently from adults that may not make sense to adults, may appear as "just annoying or whiny" or "a phase". When children don't have language to express themselves verbally, it will come out behaviorally! So maybe those behaviors mean bigger things when we look at what the child has experienced as a whole.

Mental health impacts each of us differently, making things even more important to not compare or judge how each of us feel and respond to life’s stressors. One of the most rewarding components of my job is truly meeting each client in their defined “time of need”. During your therapy journey, we spend time exploring your emotions, thoughts and behaviors, increasing your self-awareness and “tweaking” the tools to utilize in managing your emotions healthier.

This includes working with minority groups, women, and individuals that feel powerless in their current life situation.
Life to me is an adventure of ups and downs where everyone has the potential to expand their emotional well-being. Through collaboration with the client, and often times a significant other or family, the therapeutic work done in session can promote a better quality of life.

This professional, comfortable, laid-back and private environment focuses on quality connection to support moving you from where you are, to the place you want to be. Life transitions, divorce, trauma, betrayal, personal challenges, loss, or sometimes a strong feeling or worry or sadness that just does not go away can all be reasons that counseling can be helpful.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
