I believe that behind every problem lies the powerful desire for something better. In addition to working with couples and families, my expertise is in therapy with adolescents (13+) and adults, both gay and straight. I use research-based therapies that offer practical methods and skills that build emotional flexibility, self-awareness and resilience. Many of my clients are working to become free of self-defeating patterns resulting from emotional neglect in early or adolescent development. My typical client is intelligent and responsible as well as anxious and stressed, lonely, depressed or angry.

21 peer-reviewed randomized clinical trials have shown that DBT reduces problem behavior, increases emotional stability, reduces self-harming, reduces suicidal urges (and hospitalizations), improves functioning and communication in relationships, reduces substance abuse, and reduces binge eating and bulimia among other compulsions.
Effective treatment inspires measurable positive change. My approach to therapy is to provide empirically-based interventions in a warm, collaborative and transparent manner. As Miami's first DBT certified therapist, I work with individuals who have difficulty managing their emotions, relationships and behaviors. I also teach mindfulness and behavior change strategies to promote psychological flexibility and therefore overall well-being. Our practice offers a fully adherent DBT program for adolescents, parents and adults wanting to improve interpersonal skills as well as distress tolerance skills and emotion regulation skills.

Hi, I'm Laura. I originally came into this field to aid others with substance use disorders because I am passionate about it; however, my practice expanded as I entered the field. I started out working in inpatient psychiatric with clients struggling with suicidal ideation, post suicide attempt, homicidal ideation, new or unmanaged psychosis, and alcohol and drug detox. Next, I worked in intensive outpatient for mental health and a residential alcohol and drug treatment center. I've been in private practice telehealth since 2022 and mostly serve those with depression, anxiety, and maintaining a sober lifestyle.

Get busy living or... A stark choice laid bare by Andy Dufresne from The Shawshank Redemption. But what does it mean to live? Living is more than mere existence. It’s about experiencing joy, feeling connected, and finding purpose. It’s about overcoming challenges, embracing growth, and building resilience. Therapy is a catalyst for this transformation. It's a space where you can explore the depths of your being, understand your patterns, and develop tools to overcome obstacles. As a therapist with lived addiction and mental health recovery, I offer a safe, compassionate space where you can begin to heal and reclaim your life.

I believe each person has inherent value; my goal is to encourage individuals to see their worth and facilitate them in making decisions they can reflect on with peace. Life is stressful at times, and we can all use a safe place to receive support and feedback. Counseling can help develop coping skills to better manage emotions of depression, anxiety, grief or stress; to improve communication between loved ones; and support individuals adjusting to major life transitions. I have a person-centered approach and often use strategies from CBT and TBRI to help client's meet their goals.

You’ve been trying to do this alone, and you’re tired of trying. These days, your emotions feel like a minefield – where harsh words, unexpected obstacles or even "good" days can detonate uncontrollable feelings, urges, and actions. When the dust settles, you’re left in a haze of regret and shame. You’ve tried everything to numb out the thoughts and feelings entirely, and over time, other people have been pushed out, too. Alone and confused, you wonder: why does life seem easier for everyone else? Am I unfixable? Does anyone understand what I go through each day?

You are human first before the many roles you play in your life. Sometimes we forget what it means to be human- Making mistakes, making memories, experiencing hardships, experiencing joy, and navigating all of the day-to-day challenges and pleasures of life. Sometimes we lose sight of what is meaningful in our lives which causes feelings of being stuck, overwhelmed, and uninspired. My goal as your therapist is to meet you at your level, whichever stage in life, and to help you navigate the many challenges of the human experience.

Hi, my name is Kinsey! I firmly believe that every person is doing the very best they can at any given moment with the knowledge and skills they have at the time, and until we know better, we can’t expect ourselves to do better. Thus, it is my belief that we are all capable of learning and implementing healthier, more effective ways of doing things, and I want to be there to guide you through the process of becoming the very best version of yourself. Throughout the years I have worked in multiple different treatment settings which has offered me a great deal of experience in the clinical field.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
