So you've found yourself here trying to find a therapist who understands you. You have these unwanted intrusive thoughts or eating disorder thoughts that don't go away, even when you try. You might even feel shame because of these thoughts, like the thoughts of harming someone or things not being 'just right'. You might fixate on your body, weight, working out, or count calories. You try restricting but that only leads to bingeing and purging; it's a vicious cycle. These are just some of the thoughts that my clients tend to struggle with. I'm here for you. It's not easy opening up about these things, but it's the first step.

Is your relationship struggling and you are considering couples counseling? All relationships go through rough patches but sometimes we need help from an objective outsider who can offer insight and direction on how to move beyond past hurts and move towards a relationship with better communication and respect for each other's differences. Or is it that you have been feeling so much anxiety, stress, and depression that you feel you have no idea how to manage your daily emotions? We all have times where we need a supportive person and someone to help empower us to get back to our best self.

My ideal client is anyone that has experienced an unexpected curveball to the head and is feeling like they cannot stand back up after passing out and wonder if they even want to try or even worse, wonder if they have the skills necessary. The greatest joy I experience in my clinical work is sitting across from from client's from different backgrounds and thoughts than my own. I particularly enjoy working with client's with addiction, relationship issues, loss of purpose, death and loss, and client's that 'should' all over the place.

You're on autopilot and struggling to maintain the kind of relationships you want. You are facing challenges with a partner, parent, sibling, child, or friend. You recognize you have unmet needs from your childhood or past relationships and it has created dysfunctional relationship patterns. You feel your emotions bubbling on the surface because all you want in life is to be happy. You're exhausted because you invested so much time, and energy communicating to be left feeling rejected. You have been told you communicate too much, or not enough. Your boundaries are violated and you feel this is never-ending.

I specialize in working with LGBTQ+ and women's issues.
I understand the importance of creating a welcoming, safe and non-judgmental environment for the people that I serve. I strive to ensure that any client that I work with feels heard, understood, and cared for. I believe that each of us are experts on our own lives/experiences, however, at times we feel overwhelmed and need guidance as we navigate the challenges that life throws our way. My goal is to encourage my clients to explore and deepen their understanding of the issues most affecting their lives and assist them in developing tools needed to overcome the challenges they face.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
