Is your child overwhelmed and unable to cope with the pressure of expectations and anxiety they face? Maybe they are pushing you away, and you worry your child believes they are on their own to navigate life’s challenges. Are you an adolescent feeling like something is missing? Like you are not enough? We all experience difficult transitions, pain, loss, and unmet expectations, yet it can feel isolating and leave us feeling stuck. You are not alone or without hope! Whatever circumstances led you to pursue counseling, I believe you are taking a courageous step and one that begins the path towards healing, growth, and change.

My personal goal for counseling is to provide you, your teen, or family with a safe place to express emotions, improve communication, and build confidence.
Life can be beautiful and joyful, but it can also be difficult and challenging. Those challenges can lead to feelings of loneliness, depression, anxiety, shame, anger, and stress among others and those negative thoughts are a vicious cycle that can ultimately lead to unwanted and undesired behaviors. Before you know it, you don’t feel in control anymore. What if I told you that the cycle doesn’t have to continue? That you are worthy and capable of stopping that cycle with your own strengths and abilities?

I am trained in trauma-focused CBT and have experience working with a multitude of mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, ADHD, adjustment disorders, trauma, self-esteem, and adolescent issues.
Life doesn’t come with an instruction manual, so when it’s not working for you, it’s normal to feel “stuck”. Children are amazingly resilient, but they often times need help navigating through everything life throws at them. I am passionate about helping children and adolescents navigate through life’s unfair challenges while helping them become the best version of themselves. I am dedicated to creating a welcoming, nonjudgmental environment and helping clients experience lasting healing.

I am dedicated to providing my clients with a space that is accepting where they can feel comfortable talking to me about anything without fear of judgement. I believe that therapy should be tailored to a client’s individual needs. My sincere desire is that I can walk together with clients in their journey to help them find solutions and to develop skills so that they can learn to become the best version of themselves. I know it is hard feeling not good enough, or just weary from the pressures of life. I know as a parent it is hard when you don’t know how to help your teen. Let me help lighten the load.

Choosing a counselor can be a scary decision. It may help to know how I can assist you with your life issues. I specialize in grief therpy, family therapy, adolescent issues, and families with children with chronic illness. I also work with many general topics, including life coaching, trauma, and adjustment problems. I direct therapy from a Psychodynamic approach, taking into consideration your whole life story, not just the present situation. I view family issues from a Family Systems construct, seeing the family as an action story, each person playing a part.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
