I believe in a holistic approach and a healthy balance between mind, body, and soul. I am very passionate about working with and supporting adults who have experienced childhood trauma (complex PTSD) and may be finding themselves wondering "is there something wrong with me?" that leaves them feeling separate from the world. I also greatly enjoy working with individuals who find themselves in abusive relationships or who have experienced relational trauma and are unsure what to do next. I utilize evidence based mindfulness and somatic approaches and parts work that increase self awareness, confidence, and trust within yourself.

Do you sense that something in your life needs to change, but you don't know where to start? When stressors or challenges arise, we can lose touch with our identity, values and instinctive resourcefulness. The best part of being a clinician for me, is supporting clients to discover their own strengths and skills. In sessions, I work to understand your story in depth and empower you to build self-compassion. Collaboratively, we will identify both helpful and unhelpful patterns. I provide support with your needs and priorities being the central focus. Are you wondering if therapy can make a meaningful difference in your life?.

I am passionate about the work that I do and find substantial value in guiding clients on a very individualized path to healing. I have worked in many roles, most predominantly in the medical field as a certified clinical medical assistant. I utilize this experience in counseling so that others can come to learn how their mind and body connect on a deep level, and highlight the importance of brain (mental, emotional) health. I believe there is power with knowledge and aim to assist clients not only in resolving their symptoms but gaining control over their distress and coming to understand the roots of it all.

My name is Laura Clayton and I am an LPC here in South Carolina. By looking at both conscious and unconscious beliefs, you can choose more adaptive beliefs & combine them with new behaviors which creates a whole new reality. I also understand how past traumas impact how you approach the present moment, and will address these root issues. While insight and self-understanding are important, deep understanding of one's self does not always translate into behavioral change. I combine process and insight oriented psychotherapy with problem- solving, practical, CBT interventions that are done between sessions to maximize treatment.

As a trauma-informed therapist, my focus is to create a safe space where you feel comfortable to process your pain. Whatever is going on or has happened, I'm here to help you make sense of it. We all have stories to tell. We all want to be heard. In order to heal and move on, we need compassion and understanding. I'm here to listen. I'm here to validate. I'm here to explore ways to improve your quality of life. You can learn from your past and you can live freely in your present. Trauma impacts the way we think and the way we react. I want to help you identify your triggers, and learn how to respond to them, rather than react.

I have a strong background in treating those suffering from eating disorders, substance use, body image issues, and all that can come along with these disorders, such as anxiety, PTSD, and depression.
Life can throw us some curve balls, and sometimes, when trying to deal with these curve balls, we struggle to find ways to cope. For some, coping through food and/or substance use is one of the ways that people try to cope through life challenges. For others it can be isolating, self-harming, or numbing yourself to feelings all around. These coping mechanisms only work for so long, until they don't work anymore, and end up hurting you. Sometimes these maladaptive coping skills only impact you, but often times, others close to you are hurting as well... your spouse, significant other, parents, siblings, and friends.

Eating Disorders Therapists

What happens in therapy for eating disorders?

In therapy for eating disorders, patients typically describe their eating and exercise behaviors, their patterns of eating in relation to stress, their beliefs about their body, the ways their eating behavior affects their relationships, and their desire (or lack of it) to change. Such information helps the therapist understand the origins of the disorder and the role it plays in the patient’s life, important for guiding treatment. Attitudes and feelings about food and eating, body weight, and physical appearance are common topics of discussion throughout treatment.

What therapy types help with eating disorders?

Once any acute medical or psychiatric emergency is resolved, psychoactive medication is often prescribed, requiring the supervision of a psychiatrist. In addition, patients receive some form of nutritional counseling along with one or more forms of psychotherapy. For adolescents, family-based treatment is empirically validated and considered the first line of treatment; parents and their children meet weekly with a clinician as the adults are coached on how to nourish and psychologically support the young patient. Adults typically receive some form of individual psychotherapy, intended to resolve the cognitive and behavioral disturbances that underlie the disorder and to relieve the mood disturbances that accompany it. In addition, patients may also be helped by group therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for eating disorders?

The most immediate goal of treatment for eating disorders is to save the life of people who are on a path of starving themselves to death or engaging in eating patterns that are doing irreparable physical harm to their body. Once the acute medical danger is past, therapy is required to understand the nature of the disordered eating and/or exercise patterns, establish healthy eating behavior, and to tackle the many erroneous beliefs and distorted self-perceptions that underlie eating disorders and continue to pose a threat to health and life. Therapy also addresses the impaired mood that not only accompanies eating disorders but intensifies the danger to health and life.

What are the limitations of therapy for eating disorders?

Therapy can be very helpful for eating disorders—but that can happen only after people recognize they have a condition that must be treated. Especially with anorexia, the distortions in self-image that accompany the disorder can keep people from acknowledging they have a problem. Individuals may in fact see their eating disorder as a badge of self-control. Those with binge-eating disorder may feel too ashamed to seek help. Therapy cannot help those who do not avail themselves of it.

How long does therapy last for eating disorders?

Because of their complexity, recovery from eating disorders is usually a long-term process—measured in months and years— often marked by setbacks and relapse. Some form of help, such as individual or group therapy, may be advisable for much of that time. It is a general rule of thumb that the longer the illness has endured and the dysregulated eating behavior has taken root, the longer treatment is likely to be needed.
