As a licensed therapist, I work from a Christian perspective integrating faith and positive change. My practice, Hope for the Future Christian Counseling, LLC, is located in Georgetown, SC at 2501 North Fraser Street. I believe we are made in the image of God and that he loves us all. Because of that belief, I take a holistic approach that includes body, mind, and soul; however, I allow the client to set the pace and determine whether or not they want to include faith aspects in our work together. I am trained in EMDR therapy and often integrate emotion focused therapy and attachment therapy in my work.

A cornerstone is the foundational stone to which all other stones are secured. For many of us our experiences, choices, and struggles can often be traced back to our original cornerstone. That foundational stone which was set for us, and not by us. My counseling practice incorporates positive cognitive and behavioral life tools to uniquely address, strengthen and rebuild your foundation, your cornerstone. Contact me if you are ready to go on this journey of healing and wholeness.

21 peer-reviewed randomized clinical trials have shown that DBT reduces problem behavior, increases emotional stability, reduces self-harming, reduces suicidal urges (and hospitalizations), improves functioning and communication in relationships, reduces substance abuse, and reduces binge eating and bulimia among other compulsions.
Effective treatment inspires measurable positive change. My approach to therapy is to provide empirically-based interventions in a warm, collaborative and transparent manner. As Miami's first DBT certified therapist, I work with individuals who have difficulty managing their emotions, relationships and behaviors. I also teach mindfulness and behavior change strategies to promote psychological flexibility and therefore overall well-being. Our practice offers a fully adherent DBT program for adolescents, parents and adults wanting to improve interpersonal skills as well as distress tolerance skills and emotion regulation skills.

Imagine a life where feeling overwhelmed and stuck in a funk, repeating the same self defeating thoughts and behaviors is a part of your past. You now live a life of authenticity and purpose. You are no longer on auto-pilot, just trying to get through the day. You have moved through intense emotional experiences and now confidently embrace the present with the tools to handle what comes your way. Trauma may be a part of your journey but is is not your destination. You accept emotions and are present fully for yourself, your loved ones and live your values. You don't have to figure this our all on your own.

You’ve been grappling with the aftermath of a toxic or traumatic relationship that left you questioning everything about yourself. The process of breaking free, or even reflecting on the recent escape, feels like an emotional whirlwind. You feel vulnerable and uncertain because the trust you once had in yourself and others has been shattered. Recent financial struggles have added to the weight of the situation, making it hard to move forward. Now, you’re unsure of who you are and what you want. It’s as if the very core of your identity has been upended, and rebuilding that sense of self seems daunting.

Reaching out for help is the first (and often the hardest) step. You don’t have to have it all figured out. Your courage and curiosity about how things may be different for you are enough to begin! Be PROUD of yourself for taking this step! I believe in a collaborative approach that includes cognitive behavior therapy, mindfulness, strengths-based skills, brain science, and non-judgment. We will work together to determine your therapeutic goals and the steps to take to reach those goals.

I work with adults as well as children/teens from age 9-17 years old. I have personal knowledge and experience with individuals in public safety, hospital staff, military, and first responders. I can relate to the stress and strain that type of work causes in your personal and professional life. I am trained in Compassion Fatigue and Burnout (CCFP) that can help you enjoy work and activities again. My experience in that area has transitioned well over to helping others. Depression, anxiety, relationships, communication are all hidden issues when you think it is just being tired or “worn out” from your work.

Why do I feel this way? Somethings missing? What do I do next? Why do I feel so alone? These may be a few questions going through your mind lately. Guess what you're not alone; many others are asking themselves the same questions right now. Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
