Life is a journey that can be full of uncertainty. At times we need the assistance of a trusted guide that can help keep us on track, be a sounding board to offer support, and help coach us through the most difficult moments. My calling as a therapist is to provide assistance throughout this journey while helping you move beyond your past, develop new skills, and hone in on your strengths. My motto for therapy is: "I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become." -Carl Jung

Helping individuals, couples, and families recover is the work I do. For the past two years, I provided counseling services to Marines, Sailors, and their families at Parris Island and the Marine Corps Air Station. Now, I am back in private practice with a clinical concentration in active duty and veteran military members, relational conflict, emotional disturbances, maladaptive coping, binge eating disorder, and generational trauma. As a therapist, my approach centers on thoughts (language of the mind) and emotions (language of the body) that determine our behaviors and impact the choices we make.

You are struggling and you aren’t sure how to stop it. To everyone else you look happy and seem to be thriving, but it doesn't feel true. When you aren’t with others, you are down on yourself, worrying, avoiding situations and moody. There may be a clear cause from a difficult situation, or it may be you are struggling with all that life is demanding right now. No matter what the cause I have worked with people just like your and seen them move from struggling to become the thriving individual you know is inside.

Southern Grace is a place to feel known and understood. It is of utmost importance that all who enter my office feel and know that without a doubt, they are my world for the time we are together. Therapy is about having the desire for change; what we’ve done, been through, or where we come from is just a piece of our life’s story; it doesn’t have to be our whole story. I understand that moving through our discomfort can at times, feel unbearable and impossible. With self-compassion and patience, I believe all wounds can be healed. If you’ll let me, I would love to embark on the healing journey with you.

Those of us who were raised in chaotic, abusive, or neglectful families can experience lingering effects. Whether a parent had a mental illness, abused substances, or was otherwise unable to provide a safe, stable, and nurturing environment, developmental trauma (DT) can occur. Events that happen to us during formative years (particularly emotional abuse/neglect) affect attachment, brain development, and the ways we perceive the world. Although outwardly successful, we often struggle with codependency, negative self-views, and patterns of behavior learned in dysfunctional homes. This can leave us exhausted and feeling hopeless.

I believe when you are struggling with traumatic stress, negative-false beliefs often stick and prohibit you from change. Through talk therapy and EMDR, I believe there is a benefit in addressing the issue(s) head on; along with looking in ourselves for processing potentials. Through collaborative work, goals will be met and a more positive, realistic outlook on life will hold true. Traumatic Stress is an intrusion that can manifest within you as any number of symptoms (flashbacks, intense emotions, somatic sensations, nightmares, pervasive life themes, and character styles).

My counseling philosophy is that all clients are unique and must have an inclusive and accepting environment where they can grow emotionally, spiritually, and mentally. It is my goal to create the type of mutually respectful atmosphere that makes room for clients to be active participants in change, improved communication, and increased self-awareness. I provide a safe space where clients are invited to share ideas, take risks, feel heard -and sometimes challenged- in the way they currently experience life. “People are not problems to be solved, they are mysteries to be explored”. I enjoy working with clients who are struggling with issues that are either acute (recent) or chronic (lifelong). I find that it is particularly important to form a working relationship that will focus on a path of discovery that will begin to identify possible solutions. Often problems can be resolved quickly such as parenting issues and sometimes issues are very complex and require examining a thorough history of life experiences from childhood to the present. I am always amazed how my words stick with people for years and years and I believe that a journey of discovery takes many paths and has many time frames.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
