Relationship struggles are my focus, and these may be considered individually or within the relationship. We all need to feel understood, and deserve to feel loved. We can work together to help you navigate high-stakes situations to strengthen your most important connections. Through a relational, systemic approach, we can explore and strengthen your relational bonds. Life is as much about how we tell our stories as it is the content of these narratives. Attachment is a key part of my work with romantic / sexual partners and with families. Being newly seen and heard in more complete ways can be transformative and hope-inducing.

I use trauma-informed and culturally sensitive approaches when promoting your mental health wellness.
I know that reaching out for therapy support can be a scary, yet tremendous first step. You don't have to go through the process alone. Together, we'll create a warm, healthy therapeutic relationship. I want to understand from your point of view. I'll also help you to identify things that can be changed within your environments to help resolve conflicts and alleviate feelings of frustration, anger, sadness, stress and anxiety. Although I offer specialized support to clients of color (See the Client Focus section of my profile), my expertise is multicultural counseling, and my clients are from all ethnic backgrounds.

As an EMDR certified clinician, I am intentionally and culturally sensitive to areas of grief and trauma, and the body's response to those experiences.
Are you overwhelmed with the pressure of being all the things, to all the people? Are you the strong one for everyone else, even though it feels like you're barely hanging on? Is your answer always "yes" even when your heart, body, and soul are saying "no"? Do you struggle to reconcile your faith with your mental health challenges? Do you crave a safe place that you can simply take the cape off and breathe? Does representation matter? If so, I've got you.

Human beings are not born with a manual in their hands about how to face life; we just do the best we can. We try, we have questions, we look for answers, for change. But we often feel frustrated, angry, sad, and often, don’t know why? We search for happiness, but often don’t know where to find it. This is not an easy road, but I believe that we are resilient and capable of finding answers.

Is your child and/or adolescent struggling to adapt to life's changes? Are they exhibiting behavioral, emotional, or cognitive problems that are beyond that of what is typically seen for their age? Being a parent is the hardest, yet most rewarding part of life. However, a parent's job becomes increasingly more difficult and complicated when your child is struggling to express feelings, explore relationships, and build self-esteem. It affects not only the child, but the family as a unit.

Culturally Sensitive Therapists

How does culturally sensitive therapy work?

A culturally sensitive therapist will tailor their approach to therapy based on the individual client’s background. This may include changing their style of interaction (asking open-ended questions vs. being the “expert” voice), their affect (seeming warm or “neutral”), how much personal information they disclose about themselves, and more. It’s also important for a culturally sensitive therapist to acknowledge larger societal forces that may impact their client due to the client’s background.

How effective is culturally sensitive therapy?

Some professionals have expressed concern about highlighting cultural differences in therapy, suggesting that it might promote stereotypes and harm the therapeutic bond; however, many experts agree that cultural sensitivity tends to strengthen the connection between therapist and client and help clients feel heard and understood. A culturally sensitive approach to therapy can be especially helpful for those not in the cultural majority, especially when combined with proven therapies like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

What are the limitations of a culturally sensitive approach to therapy?

While being culturally sensitive is generally a valuable skill to have, a therapist cannot treat every client from a similar background the same way. Each client is an individual with their own values, personal preferences, and life experiences that will need to be explored during therapy. In addition, it’s rare for a therapist and client to have identical backgrounds, so there may be some cross-cultural differences to navigate during therapy, but a culturally sensitive therapist can do so with empathy and respect.

Can culturally sensitive therapy be done online?

Yes, online therapy using a culturally sensitive approach can be beneficial. Therapy can sometimes be difficult to access for clients from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic standing. The array of mental health support available through the internet makes it possible for clients to find a good therapist match regardless of where they live.
