Back in the 1980s, Penn & Teller used to perform a trick in which the audience would get to partially see the structure behind their magic. Once you know how a trick occurs, you are no longer surprised or affected by its presence and interaction the same way. This is how I view and interpret the changes that occur in the therapy process: we get a glimpse, an entrance, an understanding into the behaviors that hurt us, the words that weaken us, and the relationship dynamics that create specific repetitive reactions in us.
We are all resilient, but keep emotions hidden to shield others. In a therapy session, heroic stories are told, communication is reestablished, and appreciation becomes reciprocal. The conversations reflect hope for a kinder future; one where a sense of purpose is identified, trauma begins to heal, and our stories reveal endurance, well-being, and strength.
For 23 years, I have worked with couples, military families, transitions in adult life, caregivers, addiction, depression, and anxiety. I am fluent in English, Spanish, and Hebrew and honor the values of our unique cultural backgrounds and the trust each client shares in his/her/their stories of survival, fighting spirit, and love.
