Here are some thoughts about two of my specialties, individual therapy and couple therapy:
Individual Therapy: In the therapeutic relationship, you feel free to begin to discuss your hopes and fears in a safe environment. As the process develops, you and the therapist discover themes in your life. This leads to an exploration of repetitive patterns of behavior as well as of their associated thoughts and feelings. The goal of this journey is to gain a sense of mastery and self-esteem.
Couple Therapy: Couples can and often do get mired in rigid patterns of behavior and feelings just as individuals do. When this happens, each member of the couple feel misunderstood and unloved. Because empathy no longer connects the couple, trust is lost and chronic anger takes its place.
The therapist works to facilitate the growth of understanding in each partner so that their footing as a couple can be re-established.
