I utilize a variety of somatic modalities including mindfulness, Internal Family Systems, Hakomi and EMDR to support the systems natural tendency towards healing.
When life becomes overwhelming its easy to withdraw inside or reach towards unhealthy habits. With the right support you can start to feel comfortable in your own skin. If you are curious about what has been holding you back, I provide a compassionate space to let go of what is standing in your way. I offer the tools to identify and work through barriers, as well as support to navigate challenging relationships and emotions.

My clients are motivated for healing and are open to mindfulness techniques to create transformation and change. They want to explore their shadow side and integrate all parts of them into one whole healthy being. They are open to creative approaches to therapy. They understand the importance of bringing to awareness their core beliefs and posses a desire to cultivate a sense of integration and wholeness through body centered work. My clients understand that trauma is held in their bodies and they are committed to this self exploration to shifting patterns that no longer serve them.

I currently have daytime openings (e.g. 9-3) for in person appointments. Are you curious about aspects of your life that have become difficult for you? I see psychotherapy as an educational process, and my role is to help you to get to know yourself in a different way. I take a stance that is non-pathologizing, and believe that everyone, no matter how many overwhelming experiences one has had, also has the capacity to heal. I am grounded in an approach based on Internal family systems (IFS), and incorporate elements of mindfulness, as well as sensorimotor psychotherapy, and attachment theories in my work.

Being a psychotherapist for the past 20 years has and continues to be a journey with people that validates my belief healing and deep change is truly possible. The therapeutic relationship which is a special and sacred connection is by far the most essential ingredient to real shifts in our attachment systems and long held unconscious beliefs about ourselves and the world. My background is mainly centered in Body/Mind experiential psychotherapy. I help people to slow down and bring mindful awareness to their experience. This allows us to study together what’s happening in the here and now.

Like water under pressure, emotions always find a way out. They can manifest in a variety of life challenges and symptoms. I believe that everyone has the ability and power to heal themselves and I see myself like a flashlight you may sometimes need to pick up when you become overwhelmed by the darkness of your own struggles. I have a deep appreciation for and belief in the support and growth that comes from human connection. Counseling is a way to connect with someone to take a look at your struggles, values and goals and dive into them without judgement and with support.

The process of selecting a therapist can add stress to the issue you are seeking help for. You want someone knowledgeable, someone you feel comfortable with, someone you can trust, and most of all, someone who will take the time to really listen to you and understand what you are experiencing. I've been a mental health professional for over 25 years working in settings including community mental health, private practice, and over half my career in military hospitals and clinics. I offer Telehealth to Hawaii. Florida, Virginia, & Rhode Island residents. Appointments outside of work hours for those on the East Coast available.

I work with clients ranging from adolescence through adulthood. Therapists typically describe themselves by listing the disorders they treat, such as depression, anxiety, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Though I have significant experience with all of these issues, I view many symptoms as important expressions of an internal struggle that may have begun long before clients seek therapy. These symptoms often and understandably create misery, but I believe that approaching them with curiosity may ultimately provide a path to reducing or even eliminating them. Please note that I do not accept insurance as payment. See below.

Somatic Therapists

How does somatic therapy work?

Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?

Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?

Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
