Common reasons people contact me are: help with parenting teens; coping with a loved one's addiction; help with anxiety and/or depression; learning to talk to family members about difficult topics; recognizing and breaking worn out patterns of behavior.
My work combines humor with compassion and empathy for all people. I believe that with challenges come gifts. One of the reasons we feel out of balance, tired, anxious or sad is because we tend to look outside of ourselves for happiness Wanting other people to change, wanting the world to be different, not liking what is happening-all of these things are out of our control. When we figure out what we can control (self) we can experience internal peace and calmness; When we trust the process, life begins to flow.

Interactive Equine Therapy has proven successful for anxiety, depression, and various trauma, including PTSD, and pre-verbal trauma.
Over twenty years as an ordained minister and equestrian I noticed how horses were helping me, so I developed Integrative Equine Therapy. In a non-clinical environment, a horse and IET Therapist create a safe space. We guide, encourage and support you in removing blocks, building new neural pathways from the trauma center to the conscious part of your brain, making it possible to respond rather than react to triggers. We call this "shifting perspective." With IET, you can find clarity of purpose, meaning and joy. Brown University's independent data on our therapeutic approach shows the success of IET. We work with all ages.

Something happened in your past- a single incident, like an assault, or a series of events, such as a traumatic childhood- that continues to impact you today. You have a good life now and hope for the future, but you continue to be bothered by upsetting memories. You want to learn to enjoy the happy moments in your life, feel more in control of your mind and body, and ease your anxiety. You want to work through your trauma so you can get past your past.

My areas of focus include reducing anxiety, depression, behavioral difficulties, employment struggles and more.
I recognize that making the decision to begin in therapy is not easy. Therefore, I strive to make the process feel non-threatening. Many people begin to feel empowered just by the very fact that they are working on goals. I recognize that although people's challenges do have similarities every person experiences their troubles in a unique way. I find that it is critical to find an approach that best matches your personality and learning style.

Problems are meant to be worked on, people are meant to be worked with. The therapy process offers a way to work through your problems while you are partnered with, heard and supported. Many paths can be taken, all intersect with the paths of others. If your path involves grief over the loss of a loved one, relationship, health, home, job, way of life, part of yourself, then I can help. If, along the way, you struggle with ADHD, anxiety, depression, relationship stress, parenting or eldercare, I can equip you with tools and skills to help you cope.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
