I also often incorporate mindfulness, expressive arts techniques, and sand tray therapy techniques.
Do you struggle with anxious thoughts, a lack of motivation, or watching yourself fall into the same patterns over and over? Chronic stress and hardship can leave us feeling stuck in loops we don’t know how to escape, destroy our sense of self-worth, and leave us questioning who we are. My clients are primarily adult individuals who have experienced trauma, whether an isolated event, or a series of seemingly small events that have left a big impact over time. I also have a heart for working with clients who have experienced feelings of depression, anxiety, life transitions, issues with identity and self-worth, and spiritual abuse.

I specialize in expressive arts therapy.
Many times in life we come to find that we can no longer avoid. Avoid that person, that event, that memory, that feeling. It’s normal to want to just get through things, to survive, to say that we are “ok”. Sometimes, we don’t feel okay and that’s okay. No matter what you’re going through,I truly believe that a safe, warm, nonjudgmental space can help you to process, feel, and release the old patterns that have caused you to feel stuck. I hope to guide you towards authenticity, transparency, and the freedom to be yourself.

However, I also employ expressive arts and trauma-informed modalities when appropriate.
I truly enjoy supporting clients in understanding themselves and their experiences through a compassionate lens. I am honored to support identity exploration (e.g., LGBTQ+, communities of color) in ways that move clients to the life that they want. I firmly believe that it is my job as a therapist to hold client's hope for them when they cannot hope for themselves. We can sit in the discomfort together and savor the moments that feel aligned. My goal is to provide clients with skills and tools to cope with the tough moments, knowing we cannot get rid of them, to live a full life.

I rely on mindfulness-based body-centered psychotherapy, Internal Family Systems, expressive arts, and as needed skills-based training in CBT, conflict- resolution and assertiveness.
It takes courage to reckon with some of the most private, honest, scary, and hopeful places within you. Effective support during these times can be transformational. You may want to discover new ways of being in the world, your skin, and your life that feel authentic, and alive. Or, you may be wanting relief from painful relationship patterns, anger, grief, fear, self-criticism, “stuckness” or addiction. My clients often find my approach feels both comfortable and challenging, and facilitates greater self-love and empowerment. I hold a license in Mental Health Counseling, CAGS in Expressive Arts, and am IFS trained.

You feel stuck. At this point in your life, you thought you’d have relationships down - your marriage or partnership would feel meaningful, hard but fulfilling. Instead your interactions with your partner, and perhaps your family, friends, or coworkers. leave you feeling misunderstood, frustrated and alone. How the hell are other people able to “click”? This wasn’t how you envisioned how love would feel in your life.

Deciding to enter therapy, and choosing a therapist, can be overwhelming! Taking the first step towards meeting your goals with the support of a therapist can feel risky. I offer a safe, non-judgmental place to begin to build a therapeutic relationship. There is no one treatment approach that is best for everyone; I believe in using a strength’s based, client-driven approach to treatment. Each person who walks through my doors is the expert in their own lives; I am there to listen, support, reframe, perhaps challenge, and empower people to reach the goals that they set for themselves.

Expressive Arts Therapists

What happens in expressive arts therapy?

In an expressive arts therapy session, the therapist will provide the space and materials necessary to encourage the client to express themselves creatively. These can include art supplies, musical instruments, a journal, a camera, and more. The therapist offers careful guidance throughout the creative process, often noticing and talking about psychological issues as they arise. Many clients also benefit from the mind-body connection—the physical act of making art can help them feel more grounded and present.

How long does expressive arts therapy take?

An expressive arts therapy session will typically last between 50 minutes and an hour. Group sessions may run longer. Sometimes, a client might only need one or two sessions of expressive arts therapy in conjunction with talk therapy to resolve a psychological issue. Others might find a fixed number of sessions over the course of either weeks or months to be beneficial. The duration depends on the client and their individual needs and goals for therapy.

How does expressive arts therapy help children?

Creativity is an important part of normal child development. Expressive arts therapy proves a safe outlet for child clients to learn to identify their emotions and express them in healthy ways. In expressive arts therapy, children can build their self-esteem, discover more about their personality and strengths, and feel a sense of normalcy in an otherwise chaotic world. This therapeutic approach can be particularly helpful for children with developmental disabilities, autism, ADHD, speech impairments, and other conditions.

What are the limitations of expressive arts therapy?

Sometimes individuals have physical limitations that can affect their ability to express themselves artistically in certain mediums. For example, someone with hearing problems might find it difficult to make music. Sickness and mobility issues can make some types of art physically inaccessible (e.g., sculpting, dancing, etc.). Sometimes, clients are overly skeptical and have trouble letting go and engaging with the creative process. Individuals who require a higher level of care may be better served with other types of therapy.
