I strongly believe in the autonomy of my clients and encourage a collaborative relationship.
I am a licensed clinical social worker in Rhode Island with extensive experience supporting children and families whose lives have been deeply affected by traumatic events. I also have a background successfully working with young adults with anxiety, depression and ADHD who want to achieve a marked improvement in their daily functioning and/or quality of life. I also recently started working with couples using the Gottman Method. I tremendously enjoy working with couples to help improve their overall communication with one another while assisting them in nourishing their bond and commitment to one another.

Therapy can make an enormous difference in people's lives. I've seen it again and again. And if you're considering therapy -- alone or with your partner -- you've probably reached a point where you realize that things need to change. Getting that change started is a big step. And finding the right person makes all the difference. I'll want first and foremost to understand the situation you're in, and to get a sense of how you see things. I'll want to understand what you've been experiencing, and what sorts of changes you'd like to see.

I do couples and family therapy and work with children, teenagers and adults.
"When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves". A person, child or adult able to reflect and build on themselves will be able to do great things when they can seek guidance and help. Experience with suffering is a strength I see in my clients that has given them tools for growth that many others may lack. Someone who is in need of guidance, challenging, and strength building will be able to get their needs met from our sessions. Self care is hard, it's work, but with help this work can become much more manageable.

I work with couples by doing an individual evaluation of each person in the relationship and then work with the couple in a format of trust and boundaries that allows a focus on the individual as they have joined in this relationship.
I manage substance abuse issues, related PTSD and trauma, return to employment, disability issues, and the anxiety that evolves with need for change with confidence and strength needed to allow you to "do it." If you are suffering with mood disorders and thoughts of harming self, my 30 + years of experience allows you the confidence of my experience of practice. I practice first with an evaluation of each persons history and then join with the patient in their own treatment planning for therapy. Therapy is most successful when the choice of therapeutic tools are from the patient. The trust of the relationship is built on honesty.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
