Everyone deserves a space to express themselves authentically and be accepted for who they truly are. I seek to see my clients fully, guiding them in a process of exploration and reflection, and leading them to deeper trust and understanding of themselves. I believe that healing and growth occur through experiencing safety and trust in the therapeutic relationship, and through this experience, my clients develop new ways of interacting with themselves and others. I am able to see clients in IA, OR, and WA via teletherapy. Please note that I do not currently accept insurance.

Scott is interested in working a broad range of concerns including depression and anxiety, identity and self-esteem issues, emotional expression (EQ), relationship, marriage/family concerns, men's issues, sexual trauma, sexual addiction, academic skills, and career concerns.
As a generalist, Scott finds that he works from an integrative lens, naturally leaning towards a client-centered, strengths-based, and multicultural perspectives. Often, he likes to integrate aspects of Interpersonal Therapy, family systems, psychodynamic, and cognitive-behavioral theories with the bio-psycho-social framework. With extensive college counseling center experience (18+ years), Scott enjoys working with this population and understands the difficulties that often emerge during this transitional process (identities, relationships, self-awareness, etc.). Scott believed no concern is too big or too small to seek support.

I work best with those who are interested in and motivated to deeply explore and understand themselves in the service of lasting growth. I specialize in treating anxiety, depression, trauma, life transitions, grief, OCD, relationship concerns, family-of-origin difficulties, and feelings of isolation and disconnection. I also have a strong interest in working with individuals with marginalized identities who present with identity-related challenges, especially when living in a context that doesn't support- or actively works to oppress- those identities.

" There are many losses in addition to death that are blows to our sense of identity: relationship, job, status and role losses.
My ideal client is commited to personal growth. I believe we are all fragile creatures, yet capable of resilience. We experience painful thought/feeling states and then we weave stories to explain them. Narrative Therapy has been a natural fit for me: the client defines the goals, we examine the details of self-limiting stories, including family and cultural "scripts." We work to co-create stories about identity that have more space for possibilities and emotional resilience.

What would it feel like to resolve the thing that has been weighing on you? Is there an issue, situation, or relationship that is causing you stress? Or, is there something about yourself, an area in your life, or something from your past that affects you but you aren’t sure how to address it? Resolution can take many forms and might end up being different than what you thought it would be. It can be helpful to explore your situation with an experienced counselor.

Working with couples is my passion because I think a secure-functioning relationship can change an entire family, which impacts the communities we live in and even our world. I realize how corny that sounds but then I also would ask… how did your parents function growing up? How did that relationship impact your life and your work? How is your current relationship making your life easier and more meaningful? We all get stuck in relationships, we get tired, overwhelmed and disconnected from ourselves and our partners. It is my goal to help you find your way back to each other.

I work exclusively with couples to create a secure functioning relationship where collaboration, cooperation and communication are enhanced. I believe all decisions in the relationship must serve both the individual and the couple for mutual harmony. Too often life is challenging, my hope for all couples is they can begin to see one another as trusted allies, the one who provides shelter from the storm, and the place where they find safety and security. I work with couples seeking premarital support, communication issues, intimacy, sex, parenting, infertility, betrayal, remarriage, step-parenting, finance, or breaking up.

I see couples, individuals, & families for: dating/relationship issues, anxiety, couples counseling (infidelity, alcohol misuse, how social media affects connection, & pre-marital), college/graduate student stress, divorce, blended families, co-dependency, grief & loss, harsh self-narratives, & concerns with spirituality, indecision, and uncertainty.
My accepting approach is secured in the notion that we all deserve to be welcomed just as we are, including the problems and struggles we bear. Even if our problems have no straightforward answers, we can learn to live with and through them when we are better connected to ourselves and others. As a Marriage and Family Therapist, I aspire to enable this connection. My training is rooted in Systems Theory, which views individuals, couples, and families through their relationship network. I take care to recognize how family of origin, cultural, and contextual factors inform our habits, perceptions, and sense of well-being.

You are considering counseling because you may need support and encouragement at a particularly challenging time in your life. Talking to loved ones may not be an option. A professional counselor can assist you in finding more clarity and insight. When we recognize unhelpful patterns, we can initiate change by looking at our options. Even at times when we can't change the inevitable, we can still learn to cope by utilizing our internal wisdom. Perhaps I can support you on your journey towards increasing insight and wisdom. I believe that therapy is a process which is grounded in trust and in the safety of a therapeutic relationship.

Many of my clients come to counseling with relationship concerns, anxiety/depression, or difficulties with perfectionism, self-esteem/-concept, or stress management.
Starting counseling is a great choice when you feel stressed, down, anxious, overwhelmed, or frustrated. You deserve to feel excited about your life! In therapy, I work with clients to help them learn new ways of handling stress and emotions, managing difficult changes, and working toward lasting growth. I am eclectic in my approach to therapy, blending humanistic, cognitive-behavioral, and emotion-focused techniques. Therapy is not one-size-fits-all!

Relationship Issues Therapists
While need for human connection appears to be innate, the ability to form healthy, loving relationships is learned. Some evidence suggests that the ability to form a stable relationship starts to form in infancy, in a child's earliest experiences with a caregiver who reliably meets the infant's needs for food, care, warmth, protection, stimulation, and social contact. Such relationships are not destiny, but they are theorized to establish deeply ingrained patterns of relating to others. The end of a relationship, however, is often a source of great psychological anguish.
