You want to live a full, vital, creative life, but something is in the way. Maybe you feel anxious or down, or you find yourself in the same relational patterns again and again, or you feel tangled up in your relationship with food and your body. You may not be sure how to get there, but you hope for change within yourself that is meaningful, and lasts - something more than a "band-aid" approach. My hope, and my approach to therapy, is to collaborate with you to understand why you are hurting the way you are, and to find where stuck points or unconscious patterns get in the way of your ability to play, love, work, and find meaning.

My practice is focused on helping individuals struggling with eating disorders, depression, anxiety, life transitions, grief and infertility issues. I was trained from a psychodynamic perspective, which I integrate with other techniques and orientations and consider myself very relational in my approach. In other words, I view current problems as having roots in past events and patterns, but believe change is achieved through collaboration and active participation in the present moment.

Hello! I’m so glad you’re here. I know it isn’t easy to look for a therapist, and it can even feel scary to take that beginning step of seeking therapy. Therapy is helpful for healing emotional and relational wounds, increasing self-awareness, building skills and resources, and increasing clarity when you are feeling stuck and things look hopeless. Therapy is also helpful when you just want to stretch yourself to grow beyond old patterns and what feels familiar but no longer brings you joy, or when the familiar is costing you too much. You are starting something courageous by choosing change, and you don't have to do it alone.

I take a client-centered and relational approach to therapy.
— Visit Justinlanden.com to learn more —Aren’t we all, in our unique way, searching to deepen our connection with self and others—to feel a sense of belonging, to be seen, heard, known, and loved? At times, when we feel distant from our self and others, naturally, we experience varying levels of fear, anxiety, sadness, and/or anger; this is the body’s way of letting us know that something isn’t quite right. Instead of pushing away from those signals I encourage my clients to welcome and befriend the challenging emotions. In this way, we can begin to feel more fully connected to all parts of ourselves and others.

More than likely you learned along the way that staying guarded or numb or that distracting yourself with substances or an overbooked schedule was easier than actually feeling difficult emotions. But now you’re coming to terms with the reality that avoidance is only making everything feel worse. It’s affecting your relationships, your health, your work, even your sense of self. It’s getting harder to manage every day.

Relational Therapists
How does relational therapy work?
Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.
Is relational therapy evidence-based?
Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioral therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.
How long are people typically in relational therapy?
Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.
Does relational therapy work?
While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
