My three favorite excuses people use for not going to see a counselor (and my responses): 1. I don’t have time. Nonsense. You have 24 hours in a day and 168 hours in a week. Taking an hour for your own self-care should be a priority and not a task. (2.) Counseling is for crazy people. Also, nonsense. Terms like “crazy” or “mental” are outdated stereotypes. Just because you are struggling with something in life does not mean that you are broken or defective—it just means you might need a little help dealing with it. Which leads me to my personal favorite…
3. I don’t like asking for help. Funny thing is, most people don’t. Some people see it as a sign of weakness, while others may just feel like they aren’t worthy. The reality is, we all need help sometimes and seeking out that help is an act of courage and recognition of your own self-worth.
