You deserve to live a life of overall wellness. Anxiety and trauma can make you feel stuck in cycles, impacting not only your personal well-being but also your connections with others. Unwanted thoughts and emotions can be overwhelming to process, leaving you struggling to communicate effectively. Maybe you are seeking a solution to combat your current processing patterns or want to feel more connected to yourself or others. My ultimate goal is to walk with you while exploring your emotions and thoughts without judgment.

Alex provides a place for individuals, couples, and families to engage their stories, explore their hearts, and begin to live the life they long for again. His approach is influenced by IFS, EFT, narrative therapy, psychodynamic theories, and existential philosophy. Alex works with people who have experienced life’s heartache and long to find life more fulfilling. He interweaves the IFS approach with his EMDR training to heal trauma and reduce anxiety/ depression. He works with couples to find a common language, allowing for a deeper conversation, healing in areas of relational woundedness, and a more connected relationship.

I’m guessing you found your way here today because you have been having a rough time. Friends have told you that you should see a counselor before, but you keep thinking the anxiety attacks will go away. You don’t really understand what is happening and why the sweaty palms and trouble breathing keep sneaking up on you. You also have an inner critic that keeps telling you that you aren't good enough. You aren't sure if the voice is right or not, but you just want to be a positive person that is fun to be around. You want to be relaxed and happy with yourself. Part of you isn’t even sure if you deserve to slow down and rest.

Do you struggle with feeling disconnected from yourself and others? Do you find it difficult to say "no" or set boundaries with others? Do you wonder if life should feel more manageable? More joyful? Maybe you can't quite put your finger on it, but you know something is "off". Today, more than ever before, people are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, and uncertain about their life and relationships. Pushing away your emotional pain can lead to long-term issues for you mind and body. It doesn't have to be this way.

I typically work with issues concerning life transitions, addiction, couples conflict, and Family of Origin. I also love working with clients looking to detransition/desist. I have significant experience working with complex cases. Each client brings their individual stories into the room. By the time we seek help, life has typically not been going as we expected. We want to find a way out, but are unsure how to do so. What we need is someone to help us be a guide through to recovery. This is a life-long change that will need continued support. Not only is this our battle, but the battle of those around us.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
