I have been a licensed psychotherapist and marriage counselor for over 30 years. Conflicts can seem insurmountable. This is especially so when we lack insight into not only ourselves and our own childhood wounds, but also the developmental origins of our partner's behavior. My therapeutic work is based in the idea that quality of life is largely contingent upon a feeling of connectedness to others. Through thoughtful and compassionate understandings/insights, my goal is to help couples let go of resentments - the obstacles to intimacy - and develop deeper, safer bonds, and a more realistic appreciation of their valued partnerships.

I have been in full-time practice as a clinical social worker/psychotherapist since 1969, and practiced in both hospital and agency psychiatric settings as a clinician, as well as a supervisor and administrator for over 15 years, in addition to maintaining a private practice. Throughout my career, I have provided numerous national and regional training seminars and workshops for MH professionals on women's issues; treatments for the chronically mentally ill; and group psychotherapy modalities, and have also published in these areas.I have an eclectic style that encourages a flexible and collaborative therapeutic partnership which reflects the needs, goals, and personal context of the individual person. Every person needs the safety net of an affirming and compassionate relationship to explore the changes needed to bring more balance to ones life-- whether learning to integrate a synergy of mind, body, and spirit, or exploring change in the patterns of relationships and behaviors that are impeding growth.

We are licensed psychotherapists who have been practicing for over 30 years. Our therapeutic work is based in the idea that quality of life is largely dependent upon a feeling of belonging or a sense of connectedness to others. Sometimes though, we feel unwanted, lacking value and self-worth. We can be profoundly uncertain of our own potential or where we stand in our relationships with others. We all grapple with stress, self-doubt and the challenges of finding meaning, purpose, and solving our ultimate existential concerns - "Who am I," and "Where am I headed?"

I offer a warm psychodynamic approach that is forward facing, strengths-based, and salutogenic.
People who have experienced hardships or trauma that has left a lasting impact on them, experienced conflictual or unhealthy relationships in their family, struggle with maternal / postpartum mental health, and new (or seasoned!) parents trying to become less reactive and improve their mindfulness are ideal clients for my therapeutic approach. I utilize humor, curiosity, unconditional love, and my quirky personality (thanks, ADHD!) to connect with others and develop an authentic space for vulnerability. If you are looking to heal from the roots up while discovering yourself- I'm here to embark on that journey with you.

My integrative approach to therapy incorporates psychodynamic, person-centered, existential, and cognitive-behavioral traditions.
I believe meaningful change occurs when people are given the space and support to consider new ways of relating to themselves and their experiences. As a licensed clinical psychologist, my goal is to offer that space and support so that the process of psychotherapy can be as useful to you as possible.

I use a combination of psychodynamic, CBT, meditation, mindfulness, and EMDR therapy to help my clients achieve their goals.
As a therapist, it is my goal to create a safe and welcoming environment for individuals to explore any concerns they may be experiencing. My approach is tailored to each individual client, and I believe that a strong therapeutic alliance can provide a safe and healing space. It is important for me to explore my client's personal history and background to help them understand how it is currently affecting their present situation and how we can collaborate to improve it.

I have some training in psychodynamic psychotherapy.
Depression and anxiety are so very common and so little understood. I am interested in helping people come to terms with what is keeping them from living a contented life. Suffering is part of life. However, with compassion, empathy and understanding from an important other, it can be navigated successfully and dealt with in a way that allows growth. I want to help you get unstuck from the emotions, thoughts and behaviors that are keeping you unfulfilled. While this can be a lengthy process, it can be seen as a significant investment in yourself.

Many therapists treat or manage symptoms - worry, tension, anger, etc. - an approach that works for many people, but in a way that often provides temporary relief. As a psychodynamic therapist, I focus more on the underlying factors - the things that motivate or influence the symptoms that people experience. I work with people who want to explore why they do the things they do, and want to be more intentional and thoughtful in their decision-making, behavior, and relationships.

I believe that the therapeutic relationship is at the core of any clinical work. My work initiates from a client centered stance and infuses principles and techniques from psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, and eastern theories and philosophies. Human beings need to be seen, to be heard, to have a sense of connection, and to have a sense of belonging. It is my deepest privilege to offer a therapeutic space where those needs can be met.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
