Psychodynamic Therapists in Overland Park, KS
Psychodynamic psychotherapy benefits those who are motivated to deepen their understanding of the unconscious forces shaping their relationships & lives.
Psychotherapy is for individuals who are motivated to make positive changes in their lives. Some individuals seek out therapy to improve their lives and to help recognize and remove barriers to a healthy lifestyle, relationships, and productivity. While others find that troubling symptoms of anxiety, depression, failed relationships, chronic pain, and loss are too intense to manage on their own. I work with individuals presenting with a range of emotional and psychological needs in a safe and respectful atmosphere. I respect and encourage individuals' motivation to change and help them develop their own internal resources to make lasting positive changes.

I believe psychotherapy is a mixture of psychoeducation (providing information to help people develop new coping and relationship skills), emotional processing (learning to identify and work through uncomfortable feelings), and corrective emotional experience (using the counseling relationship as a safe place to experiment with new interpersonal skills). I utilize a mixture of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (addressing how our thoughts and beliefs impact our emotional experience, self-image, and behavior); Family Systems Therapy (helping people gain insight into characteristic relationship patterns); and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy (understanding how ways of coping developed earlier in life may not serve us well in the present).

My client-centered and psychodynamic approach emphasizes your experiences, past and present, as valuable sources for discovering insight and addressing the future.
It’s natural to wonder if and how change is possible, especially when feeling confused, uncertain, and, oftentimes, alone. Chances are that you have already tried many things to help yourself and want to know how therapy can help you find what you are seeking.

I believe change is possible for all of us, and I have seen that change develop in many clients over the course of a collaborative treatment. I believe that, working together, we can develop a rich and fulfilling understanding of each client’s personality. I'm trained in psychodynamic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, and I use that frame to provide an environment that promotes awareness and growth. I have also used components of cognitive behavioral and dialectic behavioral services in outpatient group therapy, and I blend these tools with the psychodynamic frame to provide an individualized approach.

I utilize psychodynamic theory and attachment theory to gain insight into how our past relationships influence how we relate to ourselves and others in the present.
Please don’t suffer in silence. Whatever pain or struggle you currently find yourself in, I’m here to help. You do not have to do this alone; there is hope. I consider it a great privilege to come alongside you and help unravel the often confusing and painful knot of emotions, thoughts, and experiences we carry with us. Therapy with me is informal, honest, relational and collaborative. I work with individuals 18+ struggling with grief, shame, depression, anxiety, and codependency/relationship issues.

I use cognitive-behavioral strategies paired with positive psychology and psychodynamic techniques.
Life is unexpected and sometimes we struggle with finding our path. My goal in therapy is to work with my clients on being comfortable with vulnerability. I believe that consciously choosing to not hide your emotions or desires from others is key to healing and growth. In therapy I learn about and help my clients use their unique strengths to help them resolve current conflicts. I am working on certification in perinatal care and menopause. My focus is primarily assisting women experiencing depression and anxiety, but I also take male clients.

I utilize a handful of different modalities to work towards treatment goals - psychodynamic (how past experiences inform how we are today), Gestalt (bringing the past into the here-and-now to work through unfinished business), systems-based theory (how different systems have impacted thoughts/behaviors), and Person-Centered (client led and collaborative).
Welcome! I enjoy working with older teens, adults, and couples who are struggling with anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, life transitions, creativity, deconstructing religious or spiritual ideology, career decisions, relationship concerns, gender, sexuality, racial trauma, identity, and transracial adoptee and adoptee concerns. Clients who are aiming to increase their own self-awareness and self-compassion, understand how past experiences have informed their current behaviors, wanting to understand how they came to the conclusions or decisions, and navigating their identity are what I have a heart for!

Psychodynamic Therapists
Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.
How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.
Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.
What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
